Blind Mounting Signs
By Barry Gordon
I have done it the following way, unremovable without tearing the whole thing up..in the label business its called destructible...it only comes off in pieces. I use composite decking boards - 5/4 - sawn lengthwise on a diagonal. Screw a pair of mounting blocks into the cinder block wall - make sure they are level and properly aligned. Then mount the corresponding ones to the alumalite using Lord's adhesive - much stronger than silicone. Then drop the sign onto the wall / mounting blocks using generous amounts of Lord's adhesive or if you choose a solid but more removable compound, use the silicone as the adhesive. No visible bolts or screws and I believe vandal resistant - not impervious - but what is impervious to vandals. I hate visible bolts and screws through the face of signs - period. I avoid it like the plague if I can.The 5/4 standoff gives a nice pleasing natural shadow effect as a free bonus.
Using the angled matching block method... the thickness of the blocks can be reduced - like using 1/4 acrylite or I even have used alumalite as the angled blocks. That is a nice durable thin bracket with small 1/4 offset. And if the flutes in the alumalite brackets are cut so they are vertical, they trap the silicone or Lords's adhesive for a nice bond. Nextly, the sides and top of the sign can be built up - so they touch the wall and the blocks cannot be seen from the 4 sides. Also, I have uses a method where I drill a 1/8 hole that goes through both blocks and drop in a corresponding vertical wire / "pin" with an eyelet hook bent in top. No one looks at the side to see the method - which is removable by using a make shift hook to pull the "pins" out from above. An alternate matching mounting block method is shown here that works with closer tolerances and the sign is slid on from the side held in place with a some silicone or the drop-in pins
