  1. What came first, the chicken or the egg........................ ??

The need for sealed plans is just about universal anymore. No town wants to take the responsibility for "approving" anything these days. I send drawings out to engineers every week, often several times a week. In NJ (we cover NJ, PA and DE), you HAVE to get sealed plans for everything...
  2. Hanger bar for stick built cabinet

A VERY quick drawing and I spaced everything out a bit and didn't include dimensions. I wouldn't make a face that large out of acrylic myself, but I guess it depends on what you have available. You will need to make the can a bit deeper to account for the hanger bar. BTW, if you drill...
  3. Routing Lexan

While I've not done it with lexan that thin (scary thin almost), we used to often do a half-lap joint with a rabbeting bit in a hand held router on 3/16" and 1/4" acrylic and polycarbonate. Carbide cutters are a must but you said you have one. IIRC I spent $90 on three fluted rabbeting router...
  4. Removal of 10 ft panels up on lift

I also use c-clamps (only the older USA made Vice-Grip ones with the swivel pads) and clamp them around the tubes on my basket. 6 x 8 faces are not problem this way for one person and even larger with two people. The OP doesn't mention the height of the panels. I'm guessing these are in a...
  5. Idea about making this sign

Actually that's not all that hard, though I've been making lit signs for way too long. The cabinet outsides will have to be made from flat sheet metal and the lettering cut out (router or water jet) and then wrapped around a welded aluminum (or steel) frame. A sheet metal roller (slip roll...
  6. Installer Needed

I'm not near there (nor am I a merchant member so I'm not offering a service) but you need to keep in mind that putting the letters on a new raceway changes the UL listing of the letters. The mfr. is supposed to list it as one unit with a switch, etc. Yes, it's sometimes done (to avoid...
  7. Drone video

In the winter of 2020 we did a large Nike installation in downtown Philly. I had an old friend come out and take drone video of the installation process. The logo was 18' long and it was about 75' up in the air. We got great responses until my insurance agent urged me to remove it. Our...
  8. acrylic primmer

I've used plain old Krylon spray paint for decades on acrylic. They now sell "krylon fusion" which is supposed to be great on plastic. Several coats is normal for plastic, or most anything that is spray painted. The first coat should be minimal and get slightly heavier as you go.
  9. Need help with vinyl cut lettering

In Corel 2020 (not sure which version you are using - I've been using Corel sign V3) it's under the Object menu, scroll down to shaping then use the "weld" command. I apparently never uninstalled Corel X6 and its under the "arrange" menu then down to shaping and weld. I tried it both before...
  10. Installer needed in DC

Triangle Signs isn't too far from there, about an hour. I'm assuming you mean outdoor electrical signs and not wraps.
  11. Does this ever happen to you?

I think that we are all too picky with our signs. The vast majority of the time, the customer doesn't know what we would consider mistakes. Way back when, on my very first sign with 3D elements, I was sweating bullets because all I saw were things I'd have liked to do differently or "fix"...
  12. WIND LOAD CALCULATION FOR CHANNEL LETTERS

If you have never been asked for sealed plans in Philly you either brand new to this or the luckiest person alive. I've been getting permits for signs in Philly for ~45 years (damn I'm showing how old and decrepit I really am) and we always get the plans sealed. No, it's not "required" but I...
  13. What was the smallest change you made in your business that had the biggest impact?

Aside from raising prices, when we started to charge by the hour for permit acquisition. Sometimes it was a simple process but we lost out on the majority of them. When I bought the business from the family that was the 2nd thing I did - after raising prices. Now I don't mind getting...
  14. Boss is looking at a new Van Ladder

I've used ladder trucks and personally wouldn't buy one. I've also had a van-bucket and it was in use for perhaps 15 years. It's great in that you can just throw everything inside and lock the door. However, for sloppy people (yes including me) that's also a bad thing. STUFF tends to...
  15. looking for corrugated plastic - NOT coroplast

Thanks all. I was just dropping off some old neon parts to my local neon wholesaler and what do I see sitting on his floor but white sheets of V3. He tells me he got it from Acrylix.
