  1. Staining / sealing advice needed for a Mahogany (Sapelle) cafe sign

Staining fillers? What does that mean exactly? Basically I'm wondering if there is a set process for this - ie stain the raw wood where it needs to be darker (only the sun in this case) and then clear coat everywhere else several times? As this is a fairly dark wood already we're thinking of...
  2. Staining / sealing advice needed for a Mahogany (Sapelle) cafe sign

Hello everyone, A wooden cafe sign I designed quite a while ago is nearing completion - it's been CNC-routed out of 7ft of Sapele (which took a friend forever of course) and now needs staining in two tones, sealing and the letters painting. As it's going to be in full sun most of the day (in...
  3. Mahogany (Sapele) cafe sign - finishing advice please :-)

Actually I forgot to mention that we're hoping for a more matte finish if possible... don't want it to be super shiny unless that necessary for weather protection. Thanks.
  4. Mahogany (Sapele) cafe sign - finishing advice please :-)

Hello everyone, A wooden cafe sign project I designed a while ago is coming to its conclusion - it's been CNC-routed out of a 7ft piece of Sapele (which took a friend forever of course!) and now needs staining in two tones, sealing and just the letters painting. As it's going to be in full...
  5. CNC-routed sign - mahogany?

Anyone got any experience or thoughts on working with this wood type for a CNC-routed sign? I attached a mock-up for the design plus a prototype we routed out of pine. We're basically looking for a nice, durable wood for routing / staining. Joe Crumley and a few others (thanks all!) suggested...
  6. Wooden sign for cafe - advice please :-)

Still doing wooden sign... I actually have another question about wood - mahogany? Anyone got any experience or thoughts on working with this wood type for a CNC-routed sign? We're basically looking for a nice, durable wood for routing / staining. Cedar might best but the samples we got were a...
  7. Wooden sign for cafe - advice please :-)

Wooden sign - more info needed Joe, I attached a color mock-up of the wooden stained sign we're doing - could you possibly take a look? We'll choose a nice piece of Western Red Cedar I think and we just need to know exactly what product (Sikkens) we need to buy to protect it? There are two...
  8. Wooden sign for cafe - advice please :-)

wooden sign - 2 extra Qs Joe, Thanks for the detailed information about my wooden sign production. I wanted to clear up a few things if you don't mind. I'm attaching an image I mocked up on the computer for the kind of effect we're going for- a 7ft long sign in exposed wood, stained, fully...
  9. Wooden sign for cafe - advice please :-)

Big thanks for the comments everyone. Seems that wood can be tricky but Joe's suggestion of Western Red Cedar seems like a good one. With Sikkens staining. Joe, you think pocketing is safer than raised for the letters? They look better raised though (ie background routered back around them)...
  10. Wooden sign for cafe - advice please :-)

Hello everyone, I've designed a wooden sign for a local cafe and we've already had a half-size (3ft) mock-up done in pine - fully CNC routered (by a friend who's keen to get better at this process) at varying levels to create a nice effect. Now we have to source some beautiful (nice grain)...
