  1. Permit or pass?

Not weighing in on the rest, but FWIW towns are incorporated... thus technically a business with limited liability (the sole purpose of incorporation is to limit liability, whether you are a business or a town). Few in any form of government or government agency see themselves as serving the...
  2. Window perf lifting in corners... solutions?

That is a five year calendared intermediate vinyl. Full sun plus lots of black printing equals high temperature which challenges both the vinyl and the adhesive. Calendared films are created using beads of plastic - the elastic memory of the material is such that it wants return to is original...
  3. How to Enlarge shutterstock images for large wall murals

There are some nice online programs that will let you do a few pictures for free to test. These will allow you to upscale and then remove pixelation. Lets Enhance https://letsenhance.io/ PetaPixel https://petapixel.com/2017/10/31/website-uses-ai-enhance-photo-csi-style/
  4. Subcontracting Question

If they don't have an installer, don't want to hire someone that can install easy stuff (and do assembly on other signs), current subcontractor is declining, I would suggest maybe there is an interpersonal issue... aka they can't keep anyone. i mean, if you have someone to make banners, magnets...
  5. Sea can/trailer Wrap

Print a large square on intermediate or removable vinyl, apply to trailer, measure to see how much going over the ribs changed dimensions, count number of ribs covered with square, do the math and figure out how much each rib takes away from dimension, stretch text and image according to this...
  6. Hard time getting vinyl over to transfer paper

We definitely need more details to give you the right answer. But if the vinyl is an etch, you need the right transfer mask material as not all stick to some of the etch options. Example, we stock high tack application tape, but frosted sparkle etch vinyl needs 3M prespacing tape (or equivalent).
  7. Blended Gross Profit Margins

Fascinating conversation. Not sure what the original point of this thread was - how to price product, or how to check profitability? I worked for one of the sign franchises at a corporate owned store many years ago. We always had a basic rule that helped frame cost of a product: 25% material...
  8. Suggestions Best solutions to removing old vinyl

We end up removing a lot of Intermediate vinyl that our competitors have used - cracks when it gets old. But the worst vinyl to remove, ever, is old burgandy. That stuff is super thin and breaks easily. We use hot air guns, MBX stripper wheels, and sometimes a steamer. Rapid Remover and Alcohol...
  9. Window Frosting (Application)

We use 3M Prespacing Tape for masking - not all application tapes adhere well to frosted/etched vinyls -we apply wet using Rapid Tac application fluid, use a squeegee with a felt end, go over it a couple of times, wait a few minutes before removing, spray the masking (wet it lightly) and wait a...
  10. Anyone else hate oracal 3751RA?

Mask it. We always mask 3751 and 3951 when we use those - even when laminated and RA. No problems then. Arlon SLX printed and laminated is a dream come true with no masking - if you can find it. But Arlon SLX does need to be post form heated where the Oracal 3751 (and 3951) does not.
  11. Cutter for new start business

For Cutters that will let you expand your business, I suggest Graphtec or Summa. Both are fast and can be paired with a dedicated printer to diecut printed jobs as well as making decals and cut vinyl. Graphtec makes a very bullet proof plotter and the price is excellent. Summa is a bit more...
  12. Teflon cutting strips for Graphtec

Why don't you just change the cut origin point - in your cut software at the bottom left is a box for this, shows a box with two arrows, arrow down and arrow right is normal, both arrows to sides centers the cut, arrow down and arrow left starts at the left corner of the material within the cut...
  13. Question 3M Cast vinyl shortage?!?!

Here is what one of my sales reps told me Tuesday: "Just wanted to let you know that 3M is going to be having production issues for the next 8-12 weeks on their cast premium print film/laminates. So we are expecting all cast vinyl (all brands) to be harder to come by in the coming months, as all...
  14. Printing to magnetic Roll - Roland SP540i

Most flatbeds have a stainless steel bed, which has some nickel content and magnetics do not stick to. you tape the two ends down and use your vacuum and print away.
  15. Printing to magnetic Roll - Roland SP540i

We flatbed (UV) print magnets allt he time. The trick is contour cutting - squares and rectangles we just print border stroke lines and use a straight edge, to run through a plotter we put three layers of masking tape to keep them from sticking but has to be small runs as the weight causes the...
  16. Need new flatbed - Advice please (NOT HP...)

We've got a Fluid Color R84F Turbo with Ricoh Gen 6 heads and LED UV lights - fast accurate, reliable, affordable. It is another rebranded Handtop, though Fluid Color has beefed up some sections. (They started in business rebuilding flatbed printers, so know what wears...) Inks are American and...
  17. New Guy How to effectively run business which I've taken charge..

Spend time cutting, weeding, and masking vinyl and get a tactile feel for the material. At the same time, spend some time learning more about the books - be sure you know how to bill clients and post payments, learn estimating (there are several estimating software options available), do a study...
  18. color loss in prints-Verscamm

Rolands like to be left on... They will run a periodic purge to keep the heads from drying out. Goes into a sleep mode when inactive for a while and wakes up and purges, goes back to sleep. Our rep instructed us to leave ours on and we have never had a problem with printing. FWIW
  19. Need Help Solid white for two-sided decals

Another idea is to print on clear vinyl, laminate with white vinyl and print on the white vinyl (and laminate, optionally).
