  1. finishing reverse channel letters

Hit up a auto parts store that sells automotive paints. Whatever brands they carry, they'll have best options for easy to work fillers, spot putties, high build polyester and epoxy primers, etc. Most will set up a jobber account for sign companies too, so you'll get better pricing than buying...
  2. Question Got offered a good deal on an HP Scitex FB500

Not overly familiar with these, but I was offered a great deal on a tech refurbished one. All new print heads, has the roll to roll option, comes with extension tables, just need to do the white ink conversion. Opinions on quality??? Reliability??? PITA to convert to white? What's the good...
  3. Roof mounted sign letters

BWAHAHAHA!!!!! :roflmao: Yeah, people just don't get it that agents will say anything to sell/ lease. That statement alone is enough of a red flag to just decline.
  4. Laminating

Agree with White Haus, you shouldn't need them to laminate if prints are cured completely, unless you always have dirty greasy fingers. For handling substrates for flatbed printing where everything shows up, I always used lint free cotton inspection gloves. They're cheap, and disposable.
  5. Roof mounted sign letters

I'd talk em' into keeping it off the actual roof, do something on the end of the overhang above the window like this. It would be about the same size as the "coffee" part on the end wall, nice solid end truss to mount to, and not stick out far enough where wind will do anything. Since it's an...
  6. So this is the first time I've seen something like this.

Those booger welds that penetrated nothing make me sad to look at...
  7. Magnetic media and HP 700W

Used to run magnetic on a Roland, don't know if it would relate to an HP, but we usually had to use lots of passes. If you used a low pass setting it would feed it too much at once and the rollers would slip. I've also seen posts where people tape something over any metal feed/ exit parts that...
  8. Installation code of conduct agreement?

Seriously, I do wear joggers and slippers most of the time, and a company t-shirt of course. It's not to be defiant or anything, it's not sloppy stuff. I'm old, they sucked me back out of retirement, all I ask for is to be comfortable.
  9. Need Help How to change to third party ink?

Epson makes inks for a lot of different manufacturers, probably most. Older Roland's, if you open the cartridges, the bags actually had Epson decals on them. They come out of the same factory, but use a different formulas and chemicals for each brand. Epson also makes print heads, they all look...
  10. Need Help How to change to third party ink?

Think paint. Every brand has it's own proprietary formula, most can hit the same colors, some outlast others, but everyone has their own, and they'll never tell you what's all in it. MSDS sheets give some clues, but never list everything, unless it's all regulated, hazardous, or flammable...
  11. Need Help How to change to third party ink?

To do a full flush on a Mimaki you'll need 8 flush cartridges (part# C-FL003-Z-22-1), These are used to flush to swap between ink-sets, like SS21 to ES3, and can be used for power cleaning lines/ heads. They included a set of 8 with the last Mimaki we bought for some reason. You replace all 8...
  12. Installation code of conduct agreement?

I'm lucky, usually just me and the dogs alone in my part of the building, rarely ever have to deal with people. I'm not a polo shirt and khaki kind of guy, but I'm professional enough to at least wear pants and shoes instead of joggers and slippers when the need arises. What more could you ask for?
  13. substrates from customers

This just upped the "now I've seen it all" to a whole new level :roflmao:
  14. Need Help How to change to third party ink?

Mimaki's can be temperamental with aftermarket anything. That said, if you're doing it solely for the odor, you may not get what you ask for. All solvent inks smell, there's different formulas for different printers, so it might be less, better, just as bad, or worse, probably won't get the...
  15. issue with laminated coroplast signs printed on HPFB750

We have no bigger cities close by, and we're over-saturated. less than 100,000 people in the metro area, nine legit sign shops, twenty print shops, and probably fifteen or more additional trying to compete out of their basements and garages with worn out old printers they picked up on market...
  16. How would you decorate a convex mirror?

I feel yer' pain... I seem to get all the stuff that other shops don't want to touch, like the one I did yesterday, wrapping a roll-up door on a cattle trailer. Guy tried several shops, all gave a quick "nope". 9 pin hinged heavily corrugated panels, couldn't remove the door to do it. Boss said...
  17. How would you decorate a convex mirror?

I had some in stock for wrapping white translucent pan faces, not sure if I used it all up or not, been a minute since I did the last one of those. I'm out of the shop till Monday, if I remember (gettin' old) I'll see, maybe stick a piece on the bathroom mirror to see how clear it is.
  18. Helping Competition/colleagues?

We help out other local shops when they need it, anything from a minimal charge to cover just what it costs us to wholesale prices, depending on the circumstances. Never know when you'll need their help too. Some around here would rather go out of business than ask for assistance, or give...
  19. How would you decorate a convex mirror?

Could you print the black (double strike to make it opaque) on clear? Orafol has a gloss, cast, conformable transparent wrap film (3951 ultra slide). I would think that wrapping from center outwards, any distortion should stay uniform and "look right". Just a thought anyway. Maybe see if one...
  20. issue with laminated coroplast signs printed on HPFB750

Coro is the cheapest substrate in existence, print em' & be done, no warranty against fading or warping. Materials and labor to laminate has to cost as much, if not more than the piece of coro. It's a gamble to laminate and get it to seal properly in all the flutes, it's a materior for...
