  1. Good vinyl for printing translucent?

Fellers' house-brand, Solvex, has a great trans. as well... great price point. Otherwise, +1 to Oracal. Great stuff.
  2. Ok, wtf?

what about simply desaturating the image, adjusting brightness/contrast and then placing a blue "color" transparency over the top of it before flattening for output?
  3. JV3-160 SP fill up ink does'nt work

what you DO know, is that your yellow ink supply is working just fine. use that to start your diagnosis. start by swapping dampers/ink lines from B/C/M with the yellow. hopefully they will fill and then you know that the issue is below the printhead. if they don't, then you've got a LOT of...
  4. Can you put decals overtop of decals?

vinyl atop vinyl? I do it all the time. best surface, besides glass, for adhesion... unless, of course, you're using some sort of anti-grafitti overlam (then I wouldn't have a clue, cause I haven't tried)
  5. Mimaki JV3-160SP Stop trying to print white!

i'd want to say profile issue, but never in a million years... well, or 10 years ... of running my mimaki, have I ever seen a white print anything but "nothing". Profile converts colors and will most definitely leave white alone. Increase % values in the rip, it always affects everything else...
  6. I love 3M.

wait, so the 3M boycott is over.... aaaand started up again? can't keep up with you crazy Westies. Arlon doing just fine around here.
  7. Mimaki JV3-160SP Stop trying to print white!

should have a true white in your art file. what rip are you using? in my onyx rip, i'm able to select a color and redefine its CMYK values for final output.
  8. At what retail cost is banner printing in your local area ?

i call up fedex for a quote, and add 30%.
  9. how to start in pylon design?

+1 having sufficient welding gear for your trucks. pylons go up in sections and require a bit of onsite fabrication.
  10. jv3 - aftermarket pumps, "suck" ?

yeah, sucks. wasn't a price thing, they were just more readily available. cheap PoS.
  11. jv3 - aftermarket pumps, "suck" ?

anyone else having issues with their pump replacements using the Triangle-brand solvent resistant ink pumps from Fellers/whomever? I've gone through 3 now, in the past year, and the line keeps splitting within the pump mechanism. still got 1 fully functional OEM pump, and now 3 Triangle-brand...
  12. Big Head printouts

yes. ...and welcome to signs101. check the merchant member listing for someone in your area that sells printing/routing equipment. not knowing your location, or budget, or experience doesn't really do much good to help anyone here answer your vague questions. highly recommended you go through...
  13. How do you generally charge for a die cut or printed decal?

charge whatever makes you $$$ or refer him elsewhere. that 4" x 7" decal is going to burn 4" x the entire width of your material... not to mention the material wasted before it from loading and after it from feed/cut.... so lets call it 12". Lets say you have a 4' roll, you've now burned 4sq.ft...
  14. Printing on clear and laminating

i print on clear lam, as well. works just fine. least expensive cast clear you can get your hands on. especially useful for those glossy laminates that have sat on your shelf for a year and have developed blemishes in the finish.... print and laminate with a matte, and you're back in business!
  15. Mimaki printing costs VS Roland VP540

ink cost shouldn't really be a deal-breaker... as you're going to be within 15-30 cents/sq.ft depending on if you're rocking OEM/3rd party inks. adjust your pricing accordingly, and upsell your expanded media selection.
  16. 180c vs 1080?

mainly, thickness to keep the installers happy.

i use my laminator to apply, dry, fields of color like this.
  19. Fire Engine Sign Pricing...

+1 i'd be charging $120 for the gold vinyl application alone. $400+ is very reasonable.
  20. Need Some Urgent Hiring Advice

temp agency's are great. if you like your temp employees, you can keep them after a certain amount of time... otherwise you can can them at any time along the way. (but you wouldn't be paying cash) downside, here we're paying $12/hr and the employee only receives $10 after the agency takes...
