I have used banner tape in a pinch. But I think you should be fine if the letters are that small. You can also put painters tape on them so they stay put till installed.

I worked in a sign shop that shared a space with a crane service. That is how it works, an hourly rate with a half day minimum. They could get 4 or 5 minimums in a day sometimes. But there were some days they just sat.

Always get the biggest you can. We have a 14' door and if it's on the road we can fit it in the bay. But the bay is also big enough for a 53' trailer.
Some shorter equipment can get pretty tall, like garbage trucks.
