  1. Decal shrinking when applied to PVC pipe

I printed some decals on MacTac ImaGin vinyl, laminated them with MacTac ColorGard lam and contour cut them into ellipses. My customer then applied them to sections of PVC pipe that look to have been painted flat black (the pipe looks almost textured). He brought one back to me today on which...
  2. Three Sided POP display

I need to figure out a way to create foam core POP displays that consist of three 2'x6' panels joining together to form a triangle that stands up on its own. The trick is that it needs to ship flat with an easy set-up by the store manager. We thought about laying the panels out flat and taping...
  3. How can this happen?

We printed two 3x6 outdoor sign faces last year with MacTac vinyl and laminate and mounted them to Sintra. The side of the sign that faces east blackened like crazy, and the west facing side still looks OK. The link is to a side by side comparison of east and west. Any ideas what could have...
  4. Nissan Leaf Wrap - need feedback

This will be a template for five local Nissan dealerships' courtesy vehicles. I am trying to show them the merits of not over-designing a vehicle wrap and that you don't have to plaster every square inch with graphics just because you can. What do you guys think of the design? -JF
  5. first few feet of print have dust on them...

For some reason, our MacTac calendered vinyl always has dirt or dust on the first couple feet of every print job. This wasn't the case until a few months ago, and we haven't changed media brands or anything. It doesn't happen with all media, mainly just the MacTac stuff. We have tried manually...
  6. cutting 14" coro circles

We have done circular coro signs a few at a time, and it's never easy. What we've been using is a modified OLFA wind slitter, with the blade section attached to a rectangular piece of styrene, and a screw to place in the center of the cut. This is reasonably passable when we have a few circles...

  8. Packaging 50 2'x3' or 3'x4' paper posters

How do you guys package large numbers of big posters? We've tried rolling them up in stacks of 10 and also sandwiching them between cardboard and wrapping the entire stack in craft paper. Neither way seems very practical or easy for the customer or shipper to handle. Any ideas?
  9. VersaWorks profile for 3M IJ35c-10

I recently switched to 3M IJ35c-10 from Mactac JT5829P for our VP-540. I like the way it lays down on various substrates, but we're having trouble dialing in the media profile from VersaWorks. Good old Generic Vinyl 1 produces mottled, grainy prints. We downloaded the IJ180-10 and IJ40-10...
  10. origins of Reflex Blue

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place for this thread, so I apologize if it isn't. A couple years ago, I saw the name Reflex Blue, a name I had seen hundreds of times before, and I started wondering where the name came from. Ever since then, once or twice a month, I will go about...
  11. Sihl Trisolve Posters sticking together

We printed 100 24x36 posters for a client last month. After trimming them out, we stacked them in piles of 50, and wrapped them in backing paper. When they opened the packages a few weeks later to distribute, the printed faces were sticking to the backs of the one on above them, which peeled...
  12. RSC laminator bunching in middle

Recently, when I've laminated runs longer than 10 feet, the center of the graphic always begins to ripple and crease. In the space of a foot or two, those creases begin to look like the Nile River Delta, and the graphic is ruined. When I look at the "good" portion, I can see faint...
  13. parital wrap on a maroon van...

It's for an appliance repair comany, and they only want to wrap from the doors back. The van is red, so I'm trying to find a color scheme that won't be visually usurped by the red front of the van. Orange and yellow go with red, but that doesn't really evoke appliance repair. Dark blue is a good...
  14. VP 540 Wipe Cover causing motor error

My VP 540 has been having some problems with the wiper assembly. There is a flimsy metal cover in front of the wipers that seems to get shifted out of place during cleaning. It sometimes sticks up high enough to cause a motor error when the print carriage gets hung on it. There are slots in...
  15. lexan Circle

My customer wants a 24" circular lexan sign with a digital print mounted to the outside and a hole drilled in the center. They plan to mount it to a faceplate on a post so that it can be spun like the wheel of fortune or something. I have a guy who will create the 24" circular lexan blank with a...
  16. banner touch-up ideas

Is there any way to remove or touch-up a smudge caused by a head strike on the white part of a banner? The whole banner is fine except for a 1 inch black smudge on a white stripe set inside a solid black background, and I'd hate to reprint the whole thing for that tiny flaw. I'm using a VP-540...
  17. 18' trailer wrap - wadded up by laminator piece by piece

I printed the whole thing on my Roland VP 540 using Avery EZ apply and let it outgas for 24 hours. When I tried laminating with Avery DOL 1060, everything went south after a few feet. The printed vinyl surface was rubbing against the feeder bar of the laminator, and it sounded like a guy in a 3...
  18. fading/discoloration on end of rigid PVC roll...

I was on the final panel of a trade show booth print job, and the colors became faded and discolored on the last 5 feet of media. It wasn't a clogged print head either, it was something to do with the media on the end of the roll. It was Optima 18 mil rigid PVC, and I had to order another $280...
  19. mounting printed vinyl on gold foil on plaques

The final piece has a 7x10 printed vinyl graphic with 1/2" of gold foil border mounted to an 8.25x11.25 wooden plaque blank. This order is for 20, but we apparently have 100's of these to do in the coming weeks, so I need to establish a consistent workflow. How would you guys approach this...
  20. bubbles form on laminate film days later

I printed some trade show booth panels on 18 mil rigid PVC, then applied OptiKoat 5mil crystal laminate. We cut the panels, applied the velcro and magnetic strips, and sent it all out the door, and everything was fine. The customer said that during and after the show (3 days later) the film...
