  5. Tip$

In 35 years, my customers were always happy with my work and paid what I asked. My customer just picked up his Dogwood and Arboretum signs and said he ordered two signs and got two works of art. He gave me a $200 tip!!!!! yessss :) Just had to share.....(the news, not the money)...
  6. Hand Carved Ribbon....Step x Step

First a word on the design. IMO, the "fold" of the ribbon should be at least as long as the ribbon is high......in this case, the ribbon is 5" high, so the fold is 5"...A bigger fold is great, but any shorter, the ribbon looks a little stiff.....IMO. I make the ends in two layers to give it...
  7. Taking my show on the road....sweet!

Last fall I was approached to demo at a lumber and building materials trade show at foxwoods. I asked what they wanted me to carve. They said a totem pole. I said, how about a SIGN with a totem pole.....BINGO!!! It's western red cedar, 4' tall, 62" wide. Finished with deck preservitive and...
  8. Mounting a HDU sign with galvanized.....

Brick Straps. I make mostly small to mid size house and property markers. I usually have key-hole slots for a "blind" mount. For odd (trees, fences etc.), or in this case a long sign, I use galvanized brick straps. They are attached with 1 1/2" stainless steel screws. Joe, Makin Chip$ and...
  9. Traditional, hand carved, ribbon sternboard

Nothing real fancy here. Hand carved and gilded HDU, 2" thick on the ends, about 48" long. Latex paints. I don't get a lot of call for these...once every couple of years. If there is an interest for a step x step, I took plenty of pics. :thankyou: Joe, Makin Chip$ and havin Fun!

  11. Little Birdie

I think the last time I used this motif on a sign was in 1981 for TV/Movie actor Robert Montgomery. He was big into collecting bird carvings.....mostly world championship work. This one is a little smaller.....5" dia. HDU. Here it is before paint. It's easier to "see" the carving before i...

Looked out the house/shop window this afternoon and what to my eyes should appear????? Nope, no reindeer........but a sleigh and two ponys. I love winter in Connecticut!!! Joe, Makin Chip$ and Havin Fun!
  13. Pick A Font

Got a deposit for a sign for a private road......four or five houses....dead end (Really up-scale/weekend houses). I'm dealing with the head of the committee who's job it is to get this project done. (He's dealing with everyone else) They like an old/antique look....OK, got it! Font...
  14. Dragon progress......

I finally got some time into this. Carvings, for me, tend to evolve. You do one thing, it changes everything around it. I change those things, etc, etc. The carving "evolves". A little more tweeking, add the scales and I'll start on the background.....that will go fast. Joe, Makin Chip$...
  15. Dogwoods & Dragons design approved!

Well, I gave the dragon a home. I'll post progress shots as I go. Joe, Makin Chip$ and Havin Fun!
  16. Different enough?

I used a basic pose for a dragon I found in a web search and made minor and major changes. I changed the shape of the head a bit and added small new elements. Re-designed the scales on the neck and added different wings and tail. What do you think??? It's going to be in a scene with a stone...
  17. "Old Man in the Mountain"

I was commissioned to carve the "Old Man in the Mountain" that fell apart a few years ago in New hampshire. This is on a mirror frame.....pine with oil stains cleared with laquer. This was a wedding gift......he proposed to her here, within site of the "Old Man". Joe, Makin Chip$ and Havin Fun!
  18. Solid Siding Stain on HDU?

I'm planning to use the Cabot Solid 100% acrylic siding stain on HDU to match an existing sign system (which is made from wood). I'm thinking...."No Problem!" Has anyone tried this? Am I asking for trouble? Any and all advice is appreciated! :thankyou: Joe, Makin Chip$ and Havin Fun!
  19. Hand Carved Fox....Step x Step

This is a two sider...2"thick x 24" wide x28" tall. Oval with fox is 9" x 13". Coora Foam (Duna) 15lb. Panel is pre finished and masked and the letters carved. About 1hr and 10 min. a side. After the pattern is transfered with Saral Paper, I cut the stop cuts with a 1/8", up-cut bit. then...
  20. Ideas to make this "Pop"?

Here is a situation where these white, raised letters on light colored brick just don't "pop". They really can't be removed and I can't get a mask behind them because they are attached right to the brick. Black returns would help but it would be just a bear of a job. I was thinking that I could...
