  1. CDL Truck or not?

Well, I want to thank everyone for their input. We are talking with our insurance company to see what they say. The extra height and tools with the bigger trucks really makes me ponder. So far we have come close to covering a 1/4 of the cost of the truck in question with equipment rental fees...
  2. CDL Truck or not?

Looking for some help from the fellow sign installers. Right now I am running a Versalift 27' van and we are looking into a second bucket truck now that we have to regular installers. Lately we have been doing several jobs that have required us to rent a 50' towable to get some signs hung. I...
  3. Need installation tips

Loctite Powergrab I like the Loctite PowerGrab for the small signs on concrete. We have been doing a LOT of signs for a number of parking garages in town and we love the instant grab of this product. It holds tight after just a few seconds and with the smaller signs there is no need to tape...
  4. welp, off to work at the strip club.....

We had some large low tac prints for the Hustler of Hollywood store in town and as I was lining up the first one I kept noticing that my hands kept holding the the print against the window by her breasts... Couldn't help but chuckle.
  5. electric sander recommendations

Thanks, we do have air but that is in our main building to run our Agfa flatbed printer. I have thought about running a line to our garage to use some pneumatics but just wasn't sure if the cost is really justifiable. By the time you add in another regulator and plumbing and knocking holes in...
  6. electric sander recommendations

I am in the market for a new palm/random orbit sander for general use at the shop. Any recommendations? I have an angle grinder with sanding wheels for the tough stuff but I am looking for something to give a nice surface sanding to prep for paint. I want something solid, relatively quiet...
  7. Platform/rack on bucket vans?

I second Keith's opinion. We have a bucket van and it is a pain!!! Not worth it for a sign shop. The F550 with a 35-40' double knuckle arm and a bucket that will swivel on the end of the arm is what you really need. Big enough to work for you and not too big where you get into jobs over your...
  8. Help on lighted box install

I will use Tapcons for many installs and if you don't over torque them during installation they will hold. I will also use Red Head anchors for heavier boxes or race way installs. Lag bolts with lead expansion sleeves are bad news. I don't know how many times I have come across failing...
  9. 3D Images for Box Truck Rear Door...How do you get your image?

Make sure the edge of the box truck are at the edge of your field of view on the camera. You don't wan't to do a lot of cropping and make sure your not using a really wide lens.
  10. what would you charge???

Thanks for the advice. I will push for more money for future jobs. It always amazes me how often the CSR at the shop will forget to figure in the trip charges and actual costs to installs.
  11. what would you charge???

Thanks everybody. Visual, I agree with you. Too bad my sales/cr person didn't feel the same way. She agreed on the job for $175. I think I should send her out to do it...
  12. what would you charge???

Exactly! We have done it once and I am going back for the second round. First time the customer (a print company) provided us with a two piece print instead of one and had the size wrong on the window. This time the print company said they were shipping the print out and wanted the install by...
  13. what would you charge???

It is a job from a printer out of state. They just supply the product and that is it. It is more of the hassle to deal with when you have weather that plays a big factor with when you can get it installed. The customer also has set dates to do the install. I am leaning on passing on future...
  14. what would you charge???

Roughly 5'x11' vertical laminated low tack window print, removal and install of a new one? Print has a 1/4" bleed to completely cover the window. Customer to supply the print. Thanks for any help... I am just trying to see if I am on par with other shops. What was quoted by my sales rep...
  15. Cold Weather Application - Foam Tape

what are you sticking it to? I have heated a surface with a propane torch before sticking tape to it and it has lasted several years. This was a metal door on a college campus...
  16. large backlit for a backdrop but curved?

I second the Lexan face in a curved frame. Heavy but sturdy and generally easy to pull off.
  17. Has anybody used PostCoats?

If it is a quick turn around sign that has to be painted I use Barn and Fence paint. Really thick and dries fast. No primer needed and it's cheap! I will brush it on once the posts are in the ground and set in concrete. The finish is not glossy but when they just want white posts in a hurry...
  18. Your favorite Knife

I love my Kobalt folding utility knife with the side belt clip(not the carabiner clip on the heal) for general cutting and then I use an Exacto for the precision stuff.
  19. Help with fastener

It's like those water faucet keys. I have one on my truck for those times when you need some water for concrete. I always try and have a few of those "security" type tools for those special circumstances.
  20. Map software

Look for a local GIS Specialist that has ArcGIS and can create the maps for you and then provide you with a file if you want to print in house. Maps can have intense detail and someone with the right tools and training can knock out those maps for you in a heartbeat.
