  1. Laser Engraving: Problem with Fading/Discoloration

Yeah, I do that already. One thing I haven't really considered yet is the external air system... the thingy what keeps it from bursting into big, scary flames (yes, there's a story behind that, and no, it wasn't me. All I did was grab the fire extinguisher & put it out!). Could the external...
  2. Laser Engraving: Problem with Fading/Discoloration

Hmm... the dust on the TOP of the sheet isn't a problem, it's all the crap in the engraved areas. And I do engrave through the premask on certain media: acrylic, corian, wood... As far as custom colours, my Gravo IS custom... something about the core colour only being available in non-laser...
  3. Laser Engraving: Problem with Fading/Discoloration

Ok, let's see... JHill: It's not that the material is "rated" for a 35w laser, just that Gravo's recipes are for a 35w laser, so they don't translate well to the 50w that I've got. It's kinda like trying to translate a european food recipe... you can't just call grams "ounces" and expect it to...
  4. Laser Engraving: Problem with Fading/Discoloration

OK Baz, so have you ever had a problem like the one I described, where the black engraved part goes a dull grey after cleaning? 'Cos one of the materials I've had the most trouble with was the brushed aluminium over black... swabbing with WD40 afterwards does help, but it seems kind of a sh!t...
  5. Laser Engraving: Problem with Fading/Discoloration

Well! Amazingly, the WD-40 thing seems to be working just fine: nice'n shiny'n black, like it should be. Next question for you laserists out there: What do you use to clean the ash & residue from your pieces when they come off the machine? As I mentioned above, I've been using the citrus...
  6. Laser Engraving: Problem with Fading/Discoloration

I have a Universal ILS 1275, great laser, but I'm having problems with certain media. When I engrave materials that reveal to black, I can't get the black any darker than a dull grey, which is causing some major headaches. Laser details: Universal Laser Systems ILS 1275, 48" x 24", 50w CO2...
  7. Colorspan 72UVX... why, you little...! (strangle, strangle)

Thanks for the tip, Eye4clr... I will definitely be in contact with them. Plus, they have the restrictor I need, and at a much better price than what I found earlier today!
  8. Colorspan 72UVX... why, you little...! (strangle, strangle)

UPDATE: just ran another bi-di test... although K still is not curing off, and the ink still seems pretty heavy, at least the calibration is still w/in spec. So hey, I got that going for me at least.
  9. Colorspan 72UVX... why, you little...! (strangle, strangle)

The continuing saga of a temperamental old flatbed... EPISODE V: THE V/P SYSTEM STRIKES BACK Foo. One bl%dy thing after another with this one, innit? The ol' dog has sat mostly idle for the past several weeks, xmas slowdown etc. Ran an occasional job, but not a lot. Nothing at all since...

  11. Laser fumes... AARGH...GAG...UGH...!

Oh, and btw, still working on the exhaust venting, but it looks like we may actually do it right this time (instead of d!cking around with one half-baked scheme after another instead of doing it right the FIRST time!)
  12. Laser fumes... AARGH...GAG...UGH...!

thanks everyone for the responses... the Fireball 500 is back up and running, seemingly none (much) the worse for the incident. Our awesome tech, Patrick, came and gave it a good cleaning and tune-up. The drive belt got a little melty, but it'll do until the replacement part comes in. heh, up...
  13. Laser fumes... AARGH...GAG...UGH...!

CES020, you make an excellent point about the airflow not increasing with multiple blowers; hadn't occurred to me before, but you are correct. I'm rather intrigued by the idea of a trash can air scrubber... haven't I seen that movie? (Apollo 13) HOWEVER... We currently have more pressing...
  14. Laser fumes... AARGH...GAG...UGH...!

Wow! Didn't think I'd get any responses this week, what with holidays and all. Just goes to show this forum rocks. But you know that. OK, first off, we decided for the time being, so we can at least run the job we're on, to take the new blower out of the loop... the laser is now piped straight...
  15. Laser fumes... AARGH...GAG...UGH...!

GOOD NEWS: We just got an awesome new 24x48 ULS laser system! BAD NEWS: The toxic fumes are killin' me! THE STORY SO FAR: We've got (at present, subject to change) the laser hooked up to an industrial dust-collector blower, venting to the outside via 6" flex hose. This system worked fine (to...
  16. box cutting and creasing on a Zund

I don't know offhand of any source for templates, but I used to make boxes all the time on my old Zund... I'd take a big sheet of cardboard (tops & bottoms from the boxes my 4x8 sheets of gator came in) and use that... medium scoring wheel first for the fold lines (score/cut the side that will...
  17. That d@mn Colorspan!

OK, looks like cleaning the encoder strip did the trick. Either that, or (as the old saying goes) a watched printer never glitches. Castek, thanks so much for the assistance! I'll be knocking back an IPA for you after work (and I don't mean isopropyl)! This bloody printer... I swear, I've...
  18. That d@mn Colorspan!

Well, I cleaned the encoder strip... lots of dust, hopefully that'll do the trick. According to the "Installation Instructions for Carriage Assemblies," the sensor is buried deeeep inside the carriage, and apparently requires serious surgery to access it, including a full power-down and major...
  19. That d@mn Colorspan!

Hey, Castek. Yeah, someone here just said maybe the encoder. Naturally, the manual is silent on the subject (as it seems to be on anything I really need to know). Found the strip; any idea where the sensor is? And I'm not so sure about cleaning it with IPA... although the hops would...
  20. That d@mn Colorspan!

photo of my crappy print OK, here's a photo of the worst part of the print... note how it falls way off, then snaps back into reg.
