  1. Cutting vinyl with a laser

Haven't tried cutting sentra yet. I bet it smells terrible. The guys complain enough as it is every time I laser acrylic.
  2. Cutting vinyl with a laser

PVC is polyvinyl chloride. When you burn it with the laser, the polymers let go of the chlorine as a gas. Which is, you know... poisonous and stuff.
  3. Prints are Skewed

Good to know. Boss will be happy if I can fix it myself. We had a tech down a few weeks ago, which is expensive enough as it is, who jumped straight to replacing two of our print heads when it turned out to be a fuse. We were... unhappy with him.
  4. Prints are Skewed

So I've been having issues with my VP-540, and I think I've narrowed it down. The symptom has been my cut being way, way out of calibration, progressively more so as I run more material through the machine. Up to a quarter of an inch over six feet. I had been blaming the media, looking at my...
  5. More Roland Headaches

Yeah, I have a VP series though.
  6. More Roland Headaches

Well, the media is walking, but not a lot. A 1/16th of an inch to the left over 8 feet. I changed the print to uni-directional and the issue seems to be less noticable, but it's still there. I suspect the encoder strip and/or the encoder sensor needs to be replaced.
  7. More Roland Headaches

Stair-stepping. That's what I'm getting. Couldn't find the words for it. No, the power to the building went out three times. Someone working on the bridge a half mile down the road damage a cable and knocked this whole side of town out. Was up and down while the power company was trying to fix...
  8. More Roland Headaches

Not that I can tell, yes, yes, yes and yes as far as I know. I will wipe it down later on today and see if it helps. It's just weird. I didn't have this issue until last week, when the power went out suddenly three times in the middle of running a job.
  9. More Roland Headaches

I'm having a heck of a time with my Roland lately. I'm at the point where I have to calibrate the cut and the scan/feed before every job, but in as little as 36 inches of material later my print is completely distorted and my cut is up to a half inch out of alignment. It's almost like my...
  10. Cut Line Issue, Not Transparency Related

Solved! The solution ended up being to run the several GB worth of updates I was behind on after my clean install. Didn't notice at first that it was so far behind date because checking for updates automatically is apparently not the default setting. Thanks everyone for their help.
  11. Cut Line Issue, Not Transparency Related

And I just realized it's not recognizing any of my spot colors as such. Normally when I go into the File Format tab I can tell it how to output spot colors, or what to substitute them with... but here my options are grayed out and I can't change them. Maybe that's another symptom of the mystery...
  12. Cut Line Issue, Not Transparency Related

Good eye. They weren't checked. The bad news is that I checked them and it made no difference. Here are screenshots for posterity's sake. They show the file in Illustrator and in VersaWorks. As you can see, VW simply ignores my contour.
  13. Cut Line Issue, Not Transparency Related

Yes. It is the CutContour swatch that was included with my copy of VersaWorks. Spot color, 100% magenta, named "CutContour" (both Cs capital, no space).
  14. Cut Line Issue, Not Transparency Related

I've tried .EPS and .PDF in all legacy formats from Illustrator 10 to Illustrator CS6. The cut line is a vector and I have used the proper swatch. When I open a clean document and just create a cut contour, VersaWorks won't recognize that either. It won't even show or print a magenta line where...
  15. Cut Line Issue, Not Transparency Related

I've got the Creative Cloud version of Illustrator. The thing is, though, VersaWorks isn't trying to print the cut line either. There's just nothing there at all, in any form.
  16. Cut Line Issue, Not Transparency Related

Yesterday, I got a brand new (32-bit) Windows 7 computer for my workstation, and we did a clean installation of Versaworks. I installed the swatch file from the CD to load the CutContour swatch into Illustrator. I set up the artwork, made sure transparencies were all flattened, and ripped it to...
