the 9840 is a much different machine than the 5400 series. The 9840's were heavily tested and though they still have the colorspan unreliability, they are nowhere near as bad as those 5400's. E.G. The 9840 won SGIA best in show printer of the year when it was released in 2006(?)

about how long is the lifespan on those? I had one for about a year and a half then replaced it. How does that compare?

There is no IP address for the videonet. you need a independent card running the videonet protocol and it will automatically recognize the printer. as for the encoder error, it could need cleaning or it could be an error due to static electricity. Make sure your ionizer is on and everything is...

on a side note, you can also use the object>expand command. This works if your stroke is inside or outside and not center, b/c when you "outline stroke" command it will outline to center regardless of how you really designed it.

If you are planning to do a lot of printing I would advise against the Colorspan 5400's

We had a 5445 (2 actually) then sent them both back and got the 9840. A much better machine, but like scottydoo said, its good when its working.

not possible. forget about the heads, trying to figure out how to install heaters alone would be more than the cost of just buying a cheap solvent printer.

Use linotypes fontexplorer. Its free and better than suitcase. Sometimes it gets flaky with windows though, but a must for macs

with the colorspans you must set the lamps to high if you are running at full speed; about 800 sq/ft an hour. You can also try 91% IPA on the substrate, or better yet an adhesion promotor wipe that you can buy from sericol.

It's starting to sound like operator error

We have one and its great. But yes, expect a lot of repairs. About one day down every 8 weeks

I use gloves and IPA on just about everything, except coro, which i never usually have a fingerprint problem on luckily.
