Just wondering, isn't 1/4" plex a little thin to inset pins?
I almost always use the thickest scrap material in the shop for a pattern. Especially when drilling rough rock. That way the brill bit doesn't wonder off.

Who's is using PVC and can provide more info
Jim,
Good for you. I complement you with your success. I'm not trying to convert anyone away from what they are happy with.
I'm up for learning. Please show more of your 3d work.

Been using PVC for a long time
Thanks for the update Gene,
Like you I've been looking for a proper identification of these products. I'm quiet sure what I have isn't Type 1. It seems the manufacturers don't have a good comparative standard. My friend Jamie Oxehham says that painting the
O, Jees, don't get me started.
I had one for five years and had to wrench it all the time. These come in a kit form. Nothing on a CNC should be bolted together. It all depends on your criteria. For me I make money by production.
Jim,
I have no idea what you're using or talking about when it comes to fuzzy. As you can see in my photo's these panels are as smooth as glass. Fuzzies must come from some other materials. Formula 1 PVC routes slick.
One of the benefits of a forum is the exchange of idea's about...
Jim,
We have often used 20lb Duna which is tougher and harder than 30lb Precision Board. No matter the density when the letters have small serrifs, dingbats, or little details it will break. Duna's common 15lb is like PB's 20lb. You gotta give this material a try.
Most of the repairs we...
PVC Panels
Jim,
You might be correct about the dimensional situation. I haven't seen it so far however the standard material is that way. One for sure misunderstood fact is, HDU will warp on it's on and expands. For years I've fought this problem. Most of these materials have separation...
PVC Panels
Our .75 PVC is coming from N. Glantz for $133.00@ and it's dense and smooth. The surfaces, front and back, look as though they need a little sanding for painting. This material routs at about the same speed as 30lb HDU but is much tougher and heavier.
The move to this material...
Jim's correct about Onsrud having a feed and speed manual. It list all substrate materials and spells out exactly what you need to do the job. The only quirk is, that manual isn't very accurate if your not using their bits. It's close but sometimes doesn't seem to work. My best effort is to call...
Jamie,
Thanks for explaining the density of these thicker materials. They certainly carve like a dream.
I've been testing several adhesives and I think we've settled down on two of them. I'll be posting more as the 3'X8' panel comes together.

Priming and Painting raw wood
I certainly have a different opinion on some of these topics. Hope this doesn't cause anyone to hate me. Today, I knew better, but primed some rough cedar with a latex primer. Within a few minutes the tannens were leaching through. If I had primed with thinned down...
Hdu vs pvc
Jim, I don't want to start trouble but I think they both have their strong points. I love PVC for cutting letters. When the order is for white ones there's no comparison. Also you can throw a PVC letter across the shop, bounce off of two wall without breaking. Then too, small letters...
Using PVC
Howdy guys, Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences with this material. I'm one of those guys who tests and tests so that's what's going on over here. I started out looking at adhesives. The main critieria is to have a glue that not only holds, it must also have a long...
Choosing the right cutting tools
On any materials I'm not familiar with I go to my trusty tool supply to get the right bit, feed and speed rates. Gary at Beckwithdecor has a wealth of knowledge on router bits since he's an Onsrud dealer. Hell get you going in nothing flat. HDPE is a dream to cut.
Using PVC
This is a track which has great promise. We are half way completed on a 3'X8'X5" dimensional PVC signs. After routing the background with copy we're now into fabricating the depth portion of the sign. After considerable investigation we went with .75" materials. Our woodgrain carving...
Jeff, Let me know if you would like a photo or two from that Muster. I have several that may jog your memory. I may even have one with Jill in it. The guys over at CSA would also like to hear from you too. Joe C.
Jeff, Nine years just fades away. I'm still seeking my fortune in signs. Come to find out the fortune is in the work and having fun doing it. Still learning but missing the old Letterhead meets. We thought they would go on for ever. Hope you're doing well. Best wishes from all of us. Joe
