One way is to try is to create a new document and place the old file into it: File>Place the damaged one.

Here are some other things to try:

If you have less than CS6, you may try this instruction by daxxter (you may also look at the posts there):

http://daxxter.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/how-to-recover-a-corrupted-ill ustrator-ai-file/

If you have CS6, you may read on here:

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1134317?tstart=0

It seems that CS6 is able to open more damaged files than earlier versions.

Good luck!

Compare the header of a damaged file with a good file.

Open the good file and a bad file in a text editor. Towards the to youll see some meta data, i forget exactly what ( i can rlaborate more on this tomorrow when i get to work). If the headers are different you can copy and paste the header of the working file into the bad file and save.

I don't have experience with repairing damaged computer files, but there are computer tech experts out there that do. You may want to do some research online- looking around on Google I found a few different resources that you may want to look into.
Adobe- You may want to start by calling or emailing Adobe Tech support- they may be able to offer some suggestions for you about file repair. www.adobe.com
Illustrator Recovery Toolbox. Tool for diagnosis and repair of files. Looks like mainly a site for PC.
