Can/Should I rename fonts?

I want to rename several fonts I've got in my system. The names don't make sense and I just can't seem to remember them when I'm working on the fly. A name like "L Garamond Bold" will show up under "L" instead of "Garamond Bold" where I want it to be. In that example I'd change the name to "Garamond Bold L" just to keep it separated from any other Garamond. I'd also leave the original file installed so it would be recognized when I open old files.

I've done a few Google searches and it seems like a fairly easy and painless process.

Has anyone done this? Anything I need to watch out for?

Pat I think I tried this myself... and while you can rename the file... it doesn't change the font name in the programs.

Or are you talking about actually changing the name of the font internally? And what a PITA it will be when opening old files...

I want to have two versions loaded, the old one with the original name and the new one with the new name. There are only 12-15 fonts I want to do this with so it won't take up too much space.

I was under the impression all I had to do was change the family folder name to get it to show up under the new name. If that won't work I know I can open them all in Corel, change the name, and save them as a new font but that's gonna require me buying a copy of Corel.
