Gerber foil advances 2 to 3 inches then burns thru.

Could be foil take up motor or clutch failure or could also be a defective foil cartridge jamming. Does it do it with all foils or just one?

Hi Fred, thank you for answering. This just started yesterday, all of the foils that I have tried to print, black, process black, white have all stopped.

Do you know how much the clutches or clutch motor costs to replace?

No I don't. I would recommend you contact your Gerber distributor for both prices and advice since there may be other possible causes of which I may not be aware. As far as I know, you will need to use Gerber channels for proper parts and advice but DIY repair should be an option so as to avoid shipping the printer back to the factory.

Gerber foil clutches are expensive

Hi Fred,

I talked to Gerber yesterday, the cost for the 2 clutches was $554.00 plus shipping. The LE is 15 years old, I'm going to think it over.

are you finding this with other rolls of media, or all with the same one?

check the perf punching pattern. I remember having some bad punching, and if it worked it's way through for any distance, it would show up in damage to the holes, but the resistance that issue created had caused me some foil issues like yours (I believe, from memory of a decade ago) so if the foil keeps the vinyl from ever traveling more than a foot or two, a bad punch pattern could escape being noticed

If you really want to visually see what's happening, take the cover off and run it without the cover. Yes, you can do that (there are only four screws to take it off). The take up motor takes up the ribbon as it's printing. If it's bad or slipping, the foil may burn through, or come out the front with the media. The clutch holds tension on the foil and senses when you run out (because it stops turning). If the punch pattern is bad on the media, the holes will stretch. But all you have to do is run it back and forth without printing if you want to test that.

I suggest buying the take-up first, then the clutch if need be, unless Gerber is recommending otherwise. BTW: Gerber is discontinuing service on the Edge 1 as of May 1st 2015. My suggestion... Upgrade by then.
