Gerber Edge Repairs, UK.

Hi Folks, forgive me if I've overlooked any previous posts.. Do we know of anyone in the UK, other than the infamous importers and a certain, no doubt excellent specialist, that can give assistance with Gerber Edge repairs etc.
I appreciate these are specialised pieces of equipment, but surely there's someone out there that is more capable than myself and doesn't want to clear their mortgage overnight....
I have two 'spares' Edges, but find the thought of 'trying' things to effect a useable machine somewhat daunting...
Would appreciate absolutely any advice please..
Thank You,
Titch Sanders

What do you have and what's wrong with them?

When you say it won't start up? Does it do anything? Beep? Anything on the screen? Which model is it?

Hi Alistair,
funny enough, just been in my workshop to look at it.
Not completely sure on the model, it's not the one with the handle & knob to lift the lid up, it has the centre catch that you lift the lid up with.. LE is it?.. not sure how to load a picture on here sorry..
However, the only sound it makes, after that initial second or two pause, of physically switching on, is the sound of a motor and/or fan and the rear fan spins as normal... but that's it.. no beeps, no movement in the lid of the foil carriers and no sound of it 'centralising/setting' itself at all...
Weird really, this one I had as a 'spare' for a few years now. It was in use, 7 or 8 times a week, apparently serviced by Spandex, then after moving into ink & wider format printing it was simply put away in a cupboard.. when I got it, it was taken from the cupboard and switched on... nothing, just as I describe above.
I must say too, that once when I switched it on tonight, the left hand foil motor in the lid, continually ran...but nothing else happened.. switched off, waited, then bak on and nothing.. only as previously said.. so I think power isn't getting to the lid part at all...
Does this explain the dilemma?
Regards,
Titch

That's an edge LE, I had a similar problem with one, something you can try that has worked for me is to take the side covers off (4 screws) there are 2 main boards inside, unclip all the connections, take pics first so you know where they all go back) they should be numbered anyway. There's an

Oops! Hit send by mistake!
There's an Allen screw that secures the board too! Carefully take out the boards and use a vacuum to get rid of all the years of dust( you don't need to touch anything on the board). Inspect for anything that looks burned out or dry solder joints, Connect all the connections again, secure the boards back in place remember the earth wire secured by the Allen key, replace the covers and see if it starts up.

Sorry, OK will do, taken those four screws out.. looks like it's held by the part where the lid comes down too.. compressor is at the ready.. need my pc in there really too as I'm useless on phone internet...

Ah, on my phone now.
Looks like someone's been in there! Sicoflex has been used to hold the whole black plastic piece in, which is underneath all the switches.....mmm on my other spare edge, with the u/s print head....dare I see if that will swap over...?

Hi again folks, got the whole black panel off now, but inevitably the circuits are all underneath that, blown off dust etc... also, ran the compressor, not too high, inside the machine with one side casing off.. I got two beeps, once!! No movement on the head lifting up & down to initiate, however, some progress with the beeps and the top head fans kicking in.. I say progress, I mean that they do prove to be working...as in operating.. wether at the relevant time or not at this point I'm not concerned.
I think my ultimate plan next, is to get the two Edges side by side, if my poorly back will allow carrying them ( aahhhhh) the one I'm trying to start up has nothing showing on the LCD screen and the whole lot has had someone at it judging by the Sicoflex & broken off screw thread mounts...so I'll be attempting changing the panel from my other edge that has a poorly printhead, which I know does show on the LCD screen......I'll let you know if any joy comes from it... I just want to get this machine running to see if the print head is OK, I'm having to use an Edge at the moment with some pixels missing....driving me nuts it is... rearranging preset files to 'miss' the pixels gap.....
I know my Edge is old school etc, but it's the perfect set up for my pretty bespoke work...
Thanks,
Titch

sounds promising!
If you're left with a spare working power supply you don't need I'm after one for a machine i have.

A little maybe Alistair,
I'm going to get them side by side on a bench and swap that switch panel over.. maybe my issues are all stemming from there.. maybe...
Regarding the power supply unit... my last Edge ran via a 110v transformer,, you know, those small heavy Yellow things!!
I'd had issues with the power supply unit, a friend located the 'blown' part and didn't know how to get and or felt confident to change it at the time..so, we put a round pin cable from the transformer to a kettle lead end for the edge.. Bingo!! for whatever reason, the 240v in wasn't working, but 110v powered up the edge faultlessly..as we know, it runs on 110v anyway.. just try that Alistair.. mine ran up until this recent issue with the head for almost eight years with the transformer!! That power supply of mine would be available if you have no luck..
Thanks,

Hi Alistair, yes I guess so.
Had a few hours on it this afternoon, a bit of progress...starting up but giving "X Axis error" on the screen head not going up and down nor can I send back or forth the vinyl rollers. Can send foil tensioning motor though... Somehow I'm suspecting the print head & frame etc....not sure why, but I guess the pcb's control that yes...maybe tomorrow evening I'll do that, yes..thanks...

Glad you got it going! Don’t suppose you have pink ribbon do you? I need it for one job but looks like spandex are charging £99 for a 15m refill!!
