Hand Carved Fox....Step x Step

New Member
This is a two sider...2"thick x 24" wide x28" tall. Oval with fox is 9" x 13". Coora Foam (Duna) 15lb.

Panel is pre finished and masked and the letters carved. About 1hr and 10 min. a side.

After the pattern is transfered with Saral Paper, I cut the stop cuts with a 1/8", up-cut bit. then using a small knife, I outline the remaining details with a "V" cut.

The mask is then removed.

Here are the gouges I used.

Here are the photos I took at key points in the carving. Time markers are written in the ground.

I've got it painted up........it's drying.

I'll get a finished shot of it later. I'll answer questions when I can.....busy as hell here.

Hope this helps someone who wants to give carving a try.

Crazy, amazing, fantastic, whatever adjective you want, that rocks. I used to love watching my father create counters and furniture and monuments, you name it out of slabs of marble and granite before he retired, amazing what a true craftsman can accomplish. Makes me want to get out my quills and see how rusty I've become.

Someone asked why I didn't get a CNC........cause if I did....

I'd be outa a job!:ROFLMAO:

Here she is finished up......

I know holes don't cast shadows but I really like how it makes the letters pop.

Thanks Again!

Joe, I had meant to ask yesterday about the finishes you use on your work? Are you working with enamels or latex? They really do bring out the subtle details in all your carving. I know you're in the Northeast, how are they holding up against the weather?

Thanks everyone!

I use the acrylic laytex on all my HDU projects. I really don't have a good handle yet on painting images with it...............I gotta get some lessons. The staining techniques that I am comfortable with (on wood) are similar to using watercolors.....layers of washes. BIG difference!

The wood signs get 5 coats of polyurethane but need "refreshing" every couple of years. I've only taken one order for wood this year.

Here's another recent one.....HDU/laytex....The exposure on this is bad but you get the idea.

That is truly amazing. Thanks much for sharing that. I am amazed at what a sign can be considering the pile of real estate coros I am staring at haha.
