illustrator RGB yellow

Hey Guys,

I design in RGB. Just got a soljet. When printing a "pure yellow" from an ai file, its greenish. In illustrator, when i punch in 100 for the yellow value it is changed to a different value after ( 4 1 93 0) etc. Question how can i get it to NOT change my inputs!? i just want a pure yellow printed from my file.

using versaworks.

HI - I've run into this problem ALOT. In RGB, AFAIK there isn't a way to change how it translates, but you can use Roland's swatch and tell versaworks to replace it under the file format tab. I use RVW-PR01k as my yellow swatch and it prints 100% yellow.... FYI RVW-PR43K gives a kick-ass red.

Sorry - should have been more clear.

I use the Roland swatch for all my yellow as a spot color. Then in Versaworks I go to the file format tab in teh settings window and under Spot Colors I click on "convert colors." It will list the swatch colors followed by the ink mix Versaworks will use to print it.

hmm that may work. I may try it tonight. Kinda seems like a hassle though. Seems like i should be able to print it directly from the file and have nothing changed.

If you're working with vector art change to cmyk mode and then make it 100% yellow. Are you not able to print from a cmyk .eps file?

I know, i work in cmyk for some. Its just that in rgb, there is a larger variety of "popping" colors. bright ones. Most cmyks are just blah

Have you tried just making the yellow Pantone Process Yellow (spot)?
This worked for me on a Vutek when I was losing color by changing the original art out of RGB.

I don't understand the question posed by the original poster. When working in RGB, yellow is achieved by mixing large amounts of Red and Green...there is no 'punch in 100 for the yellow value', unless working in CMYK process color mode.

im sayig that when exported to versaworks as an eps, i cant get a pure yellow in RGB. It is a 4 2 91 0 mix. Even though it is 255 255 0 as an rgb. So it prints out bluish. I was asking to see if theres a way in illustrator to turn color correction off or something so that the value stays at 100 percent yellow.

The conversion from RGB to CMYK is happening in Versaworks, not Illustrator. In the Job Settings dialog, go to the Quality Tab, and change the Color Management preset to 'Density Control Only'. Then print the file. This action turns off ICC-based Color Management in Versaworks, and should give you a better yellow (though it may screw up other colors of the file).

I use the swatch system set up by Roland, you have to design in cmyk, Roland supplies a file for Versaworks that you print out on the media you use commonly, it has your actual serial number of your printer on the file, then you take this big sheet to your cutting table & cut it up & punch a hole in each one put a zip tie through it & now you have a swatch that is color matched to YOUR printer with your favorite media, then you load the swatch pallet into illustrator and while you are designing you can show your customer the swatches, it looks a lot like my pantone swatch I use that cost me a hundred bucks but anyway when I choose a color from the swatch no matter what it looks like on the screen it prints out matching the swatch. You can make this swatch with all the different types of media you use & just pick the number on the color & it matches,

Got er done.

Thanks Bigdawg. I did it your way and the rgbs i didnt like came out deep and rich!

Its kind of a pain in the ass, designing in rgb, then converting some over to the roland spot colors, but it works out very nice! and the proofs look much nicer than cmyks as well. Thanks again
