the fuses protect the heads. Fuse 1 carries the 41v that feeds the power side of the heads. If you are popping fuse 1, you either have a bad resistor on the board that is allowing more than 41v to the fuse, a head cable installed incorrectly, or a bad head.

Vp540 has better quality, faster, better detail in smaller prints. I use Sp540 which is almost $4000 less than Vp540 and I think the upgrade don't worth $4000 more.
