Split blended shadows

Split blended shadows.

It's been a long time since I did this. So I cannot remember.
Is the shadow color deeper next to the letter or is it the other way around?
I'm confused because in art work.deep colors receed to the background. And seeing some split blended shadows with the deepest color touching the letters.

Thank you in advance

With gold leaf work, it's genrally accepted that the darker color is closer to the letter. I don't know that there is a "rule" for this, but it seems to look better and emphasize the letters better that way.

I've always done it with the darker color closer to the letter as though it's "deeper" in the shadow.
