Sudden drop in Magenta ink

My "Printer Status" showed the Magenta ink (440) at one notch down the other day (red line in attachment), and today it's way down near the bottom, with barely any printing done.

The drain bottle is not suddenly full, so how can this be?

Either you tripped the ink end sensor accidentally or it is broken. Depending on how old the model of the machine is, you should be able to just pull the cartridge out and reinstall. If that doesn't work, you either have a newer model that doesn't reset when the ink cartridge is reinstalled or the ink end sensor is broken. If the sensor is broken it will tell the machine that any cartridge you put into that slot is empty. Take a flashlight and look in the cartridge holder. Compare it with on that is working to see if anything is out of place. The ink sensor is towards the back bottom right part of the holder.

Thanks for the reply. The machine is 5.5 years old. I just now took the cartridge out (which felt heavy), inspected inside the slot, and all looks well. Re-installed the cartridge and the level is back to where it was originally (near the top). I've never had that happen before, but thanks.

No problem! The sensor is very sensitive so you probably just grazed it when putting the cartridge in. Luckily, your model doesn't keep track of empty cartridges on the ink chip or in the printer memory.
