Versacamm VS-540 randomly skips a cut or not deep enough

When plotting, whether it's a contour cut or just cutting vinyl, my Versacamm VS-540 randomly skips a cut or not deep enough.
It's not the cutting strip, because it's different spots.
It's not the file, because I might have 5 identical plots & it does it on the second or third one.

I normally cut from PDF files, would I be better of cutting from EPS?
Any other thoughts?

My first suspicion is the cut tool carriage cable. They are a common replacement for strange cutting behavior.

Is that the same as the print cable?

No. It connects to the board on top of the cutter head.

Jim is right. There is a metal guide in there too that might need replacing.
