Vp-540 is cuttting random lines

Sometimes when I only cutting (not printing and cutting) the knife suddenly starts to make straight lines in every direction. For example yesterday I was cutting some letters, the first 2 letters were fine and then the knife started to make lines. I think that when media moves backward and forward the knife is not pulling up. Any solution?

No, when media is moving the blade doesen't move up, it stays down.
How do you mean "How far out..."

Encoder strip is flimsy plastic strip that sits up on top of the Y-rail (the rail that carriage runs back and forth on. It runs the length of the machine. Reach up in their with a lint free cloth (or even paper towel) soaked with isopropyl alcohol.

Unfortunately, when mine did this, it was the mainboard that had to be replaced. I was lucky enough to have it still under warranty.
