What I do is type out my text then click on the pick tool (your text should still be selected).
Then go to the font drop-down in the toolbar at the top of the page and you can hover over each font. It will change your text as you go down the list.

For the price, i have no complaints. Dug well over 40 holes, 3' deep using the included bit.
It does give ya a work-out when there's an inch of topsoil and 35" of shale, lol. But it does the job.
Not sure if you wanted to try a different method but this should get you the results you're looking for.
I just created a simple rope length design and saved it as a brush (see pic). Make sure the ends of it are straight vertically or it won't close properly when added to your shape.

In X6, i combine them all like you said. Then use the Virtual Segment Delete (located under the Crop tool fly-out) and just break apart when finished.
Or you can select the object you'd wish to leave open, go to Object Properties docker and scroll down to Curve then untick the Close Curve box...
