Signgrl,
It is a complex topic & I do have a lot of valuable suggestions I could make, but I want to suggest that you start another thread specifically about that. The reason is because not only will I feel more inclined to type out extensive suggestions, if I think they may benefit multiple users both now, and in the future when people search out old topics... but also because a lot of my opinions are shared by others here, or were even taught to me by others here... so as the discussion develops, I will chime in with the thoughts I haven't seen addressed yet, but others will also be chiming in...
..short answer though, the idea of subbing out first is a great idea, even if it's only for 6 months... because you can start thinking of print design, start talking about it to your customers, start selling it & start having both satisfied customer work out on the street, as well as samples in your shop... all before you even get your own printer. This will help you establish that there is a market for it, train yourself to both sell, and design full color work... and be more confident of your ability to make your payment when you do select a printer.
I started selling edge prints I bought from another shop. 2 years later I bought my own. 4 years later I bought a 63" Mimaki JV3. I love both the Edge 2, and the Mimaki... and now my milticam CNC as well
