don't be scared, but be careful it is very common to make this sort of problem worse while troubleshooting, just be aware that those cables only unplug so many times before the conductors start to lift. also check for ink splatters on the white surface of the cables and where they plug in.

if i am understanding the problem with black, i think i would replace ribbon cables connected tothe black print head. at least check for conductor pins bent over where they plug in. BE CAREFUL, it is easy to damage these cables when plugging in.

even if you did that thee data would be out of position, relative to the encoder pulses kind of like how you would print if you switched ribbons on a (6) DX4 head machine, only much worse. seems like positioning would be off by the width of the head, relative to the other print heads

seems like you want to keep WHATEVER equipmentbyou have under contract with SOMEONE. our rolands are OLD, but we maintain our own. get a good working relationship with a service company. i am not sure IF THERE ARE independents willing to maintain your equipment with an extended warranty.
