Looks like you can place a photo into all sorts of scenarios and/or filter it. There's no controls on contrast or sizing. Here's another pencil example.

I think it makes a photo look look like a sketch, like his new avatar... Look's to be free in the android market. I'll give'r a go

If you don't need them as strokes and more, you can expand the object and then expand strokes into shapes.

I believe this issue is due to poor typefaces, as the OP hinted. If I understand this correct, the protection's designed to keep lazy designers safe from choosing a font that's missing something in the copy i.e. parentheses, quotes-marks, commas, an entire lowercase.....

I figured this out once. In your type preference Uncheck Enable Missing Glyph Protection
