  1. VersaSTUDIO BN-20

Anyone have any experience with this little guy? I haven't worked with Roland's before but the VersaSTUDIO BN-20 is intriguing for a few product ideas I have. Initial price tag is a bit steep but considering how much similar work we do through our Gerber it's an interesting option. Appreciate...
  2. Scaling Bitmaps - RIP vs PS

Until you get Perfect Resize (which you should do immediately) you can mimic it's effect by scaling up in photoshop in steps. I.E. to scale up 600% first scale 150% then 200% then 200% (or in even smaller steps).
  3. Simply amazing hand engraving

    Very cool, thanks.
  4. Best vector for the $$

Sounds like you need to learn how to use the pathfinder tools. Illustrator, by far, not even really something you can argue over. Especially with the CADtools plugin. Corel is okay if all you do is signage work but if you do anything else you're going to get into trouble quickly due to...
  5. Scaling Bitmaps - RIP vs PS

Always upscale in Perfect Photo instead of the RIP. Downscaling meh, RIP is fine, though I still prefer to do it manually in photoshop so I can preview the results if it's something critical like a photo print.
  6. Something everyone should read..

That's often not the fault of the billboard company (though most are pretty useless at design), they just put up what the client tells them to. Most of the time that client had their daugher design something because she's "artistic" or the marketing department had the one guy who has photoshop...
  7. customer wants .pdf what would you do?

Legally you have this completely backwards. The designer automatically has intellectual property rights on anything created and that ownership right must be transferred in writing to a third party (the client) or the designer still has the rights. Work-for-hire comes into play as well but in...
  8. Cloud Software - What do you use?

Except that it was gibberish. There are few on this board who don't benefit from cloud? Probably half the board uses gmail, which is cloud SaaS. In any case this conversation has passed it's usefulness quite a while ago ;P.
  9. Color Confused??

RGB is generally better -- ideally you'd profile your machine and use that color space as your preview output profile so that your out of gamut warnings are accurate and you're getting the maximum out of your machine. Workflow questions are always problematic, people like working in different ways.
  10. Cloud Software - What do you use?

The main advantage to cloud SaaS or PaaS systems was already brought up, you're putting the responsibility and integrity into the hands of specialized professionals instead of having yet one more thing to manage (usually poorly) as a business owner. Either that or you have to be willing to shell...
  11. Cloud Software - What do you use?

Can you clarify this? Sounds like something that's pretty easily done in the half-dozen or so SaaS invoicing systems I've tried, though I haven't seen the SignVOX demo yet. Why wouldn't you apply the discount at the time of initial invoicing and I don't really follow why you'd put a job on Hold...
  12. Cloud Software - What do you use?

CES020 I guarantee you that the majority of Fortune 500 are leveraging 'cloud' tech in some fashion or another and probably have been for a good number of years. I think you're maybe a bit confused as to what exactly is in discussion here. SaaS is the discussion but you keep referencing cloud as...
  13. customer wants .pdf what would you do?

All of these questions are easily solved if you have an existing store policy and something the customer signs which outlines their rights and what they're paying for. Every shop is going to treat this issue differently. If you didn't explain their customer rights up front then you're going to...
  14. Cloud Software - What do you use?

Cloud tech really isn't in it's infancy, it's rather mature all around which is why it's essentially ubiquitous now. Basecamp by 37signals, which is as good a marker point as any, was launched in 2004 and ushered in the most recent, publicized, visible shift towards SaaS models. That's already 7...
  15. Rastered text in photoshop question...

If you're designing only in Illustrator and it's all vector you should leave it all vector and not bring it into photoshop before output. If you want to mix vector and raster elements it's still best to leave the vector alone (un-rasterized) until final print using one of the following...
  16. why when you use 54" does the printer say 52.5"

I do the exact same thing all the time on our JV3.
  17. Cloud Software - What do you use?

Audits are less about sensitive information and more about avoiding exploits, but yeah VaultPress is a bit overkill if you aren't doing six figure uniques. Pricepoint is just too high. Also I think you mean mailchimp ;), one of my favorite services. Great example of SaaS.
  18. Cloud Software - What do you use?

Neither. REV. Zip/Jaz were way more common (and a bit earlier). REV was a small squarish mechanical HD cart with densities of 35GB. Check out VaultPress, it's a bit pricey but well worth it and has some additional features (security audits, etc.). Nothing wrong with your method though and...
  19. Cloud Software - What do you use?

When I first took this job the 2005 and earlier files were on some weird Iomega format high density microformat that existed for all of 5 minutes and the 'discs' failed due to bad writes from corrupted drivers (drivers no longer available from Iomega) when access was attempted. Obsolescence is a...
  20. Cloud Software - What do you use?

Definitely. Careful with DVDs, typical DVDs aren't rated for very long term and fire rated safes are usually only rated for paper, not for plastic media (so when you buy a safe for onsite/offsite storage, make sure it's media rated). Paper has a high ignition temperature, way above the...
