  1. Shaded Shadow?

I should have been more specific with my question. The actual shadow is no problem, I can do any form of that in flexi. It is the gradient/shadowed fill within the shadow that I am trying to figure out. I know it is an old sign painter style that I've seen quite a bit on fire apparatus. I just...
  2. Shaded Shadow?

In the process of studying Jersey Style truck lettering, I stumbled across this job by Cranberry Signcraft. If you haven't seen their website, it is definitely worth checking out- they do some amazing work. But this particular job reminded me of a truck I saw at the fire show a couple months...
  3. Jersey Style Truck Lettering

I will be trying to create it with a computer. I am slowly teaching myself how to do hand lettering, but I am nowhere near ready. I am just sick of seeing the same lettering on almost everything around here, it is either plain cut vinyl or some crazy logo that uses every photoshop effect known...
  4. Jersey Style Truck Lettering

I am looking for some more info on Jersey Style truck lettering. Tutorials, articles, books, examples... anything like that. I really like this style mostly because you don't see much of it in my area (North Carolina). I have done some internet research and couldn't find much other than a few...
  5. Media for 42" printer

That's a good point, I didn't think about that. There is still a lot that can be done on a 20" roll.
  6. Media for 42" printer

I am looking at buying a 42" L25500. From what I have seen, there aren't many options for material in this size. For those that have this printer or a similar size, are you buying 48" material and cutting it down?
  7. Long Run on the Edge...

Printing the drop shadows and highlights looks a lot cleaner. I could use layered vinyl, but that starts to look messy when you lay the clear vinyl on top to protect the sign gold. I do agree with it being easier as far as registration goes though. Edit- I just realized the picture I uploaded...
  8. Long Run on the Edge...

Yes the Edge tracking is great, but color alignment and then plotter alignment get off the further the run is. The biggest issue is how unpredictable the Edge is. It may be just my machine, but it will print fine for two weeks then decide to shut down and give an error in the middle of a job. I...
  9. Long Run on the Edge...

The red represents the side of the truck, the black is regular vinyl. Both sides of the truck are getting this design, and luckily the 5.5" height worked out to where both sides will stack on top of each other. That is why it is so tough to split it up, because in a perfect world it would work...
  10. Long Run on the Edge...

I have a job coming up that is going to require 5.5" tall by 10 feet long Sign Gold lettering on a fire truck. I have done fairly long runs on the Edge before, but I have always been able to break them up to minimize the risks of something going wrong. Ideally, this needs to be ran straight...
  11. Oracal 352 911 Double Sided Gold

I decided to order some of the Avery double gold to try out on some reverse window lettering, but after talking with someone at Express Sign Supply I decided to try the Oracal 352 instead since I use Oracal for most everything else and it has been good stuff so far. The roll was delivered...
  12. Needing a good laminator to pair with my Edge

I stumbled across a deal on craigslist that seemed to be too good to pass up. USI 27" laminator with heat, $120. The guy said if it doesn't do what I need it to do he will take it back. It isn't fancy, but I think it will work for now. Anyone have any experience with these?
  13. Avery Double Gold

I am looking into getting some of the Double Gold to try out for reverse glass work. If I lay it on the glass and then either use brushed on back up black or black cast vinyl as the back up, how will it hold up? I know the outdoor rating is either one or two years, but reverse glass work isn't...
  14. Needing a good laminator to pair with my Edge

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I will look into it a little further. I guess I should explain what I'm doing a little better. Metal fire helmet shields and gold leaf graphics have become a major part of my business. I need to laminate the edge prints that go on the helmet shields for added...
  15. Needing a good laminator to pair with my Edge

Recently my business has shifted towards doing a large number of fire department related graphics on my Edge LE, and I am needing a laminator to laminate these prints. I don't want to break the bank, all I need it to do is laminate Edge prints. Any suggestions?
  16. Reverse glass people... tell me what I did wrong!

You are 100% correct on it being a niche market. When I started my business I planned on specializing in fire department work. Sign Gold and reflective vinyl are the hot commodities in the fire service area, but something about the Sign Gold just didn't make me feel like it was giving the...
  17. Reverse glass people... tell me what I did wrong!

Biker Scout, that didn't turn out bad at all, it just doesn't have the mirror shine I'm looking for. I realize the way I'm doing it isn't the fastest, but it is the traditional way and the perfect almost mirror-like appearance has always amazed me. Round Man- thank you for taking the time to...
  18. Reverse glass people... tell me what I did wrong!

I was using loose leaf and a tip. I didn't try to stretch it with my finger, but I did try to blow on it to flatten it. That caused some issues haha. According to the Gold Leaf Techniques book, a couple drops of detergent is supposed to reduce the "crawling" of the size.
  19. Reverse glass people... tell me what I did wrong!

I decided to try reverse glass gilding. I got a nice picture frame from Hobby Lobby to use for my first attempt. I cleaned the glass with paint prep and then Gilder's Soap from Letterhead Sign Supply. The outlines were painted using a paint mask and One Shot. I let the outlines fully dry for a...
  20. Does anyone have any experience with Learn2PaintSigns.com?

Thank you all for the great advice. I'm looking around to see if there is anything better out there, and I'm also trying to find some local sign painters. Does anyone have any recommendations for some good books on sign painting, old signs, reverse glass work and shop front lettering? I have the...
