  1. color profiling lessons

Black Point Compensation has been included since version 6.6. Latest version is 6.7, so do the upgrade whenever you can.
  2. color profiling lessons

In my case, I set them up with Adobe RGB and ISOcoated_v2_eci for CMYK. I've heard it so many times that my ears are gonna bleed. Its like a software program: minimum requirement is a Pentium 4; recommended Intel Quad Core... If you can run it with the minimum, great, less money for a...
  3. color profiling lessons

You have a point here, and this unfortunately is the bread and butter of our business. But at least the ones following this thread are now aware of it.
  4. color profiling lessons

Why not AdobeRGB 1998 for RGB? It has a slightly wider gamut that sRGB (towards greens and blues, but its still wider than sRGB). I use ISOcoated_v2_eci instead of US Web Coated SWOP. As you can see, it has a wider gamut. Just my 2 cents...
  5. Ink Limits

One more thing about Pantone charts: they're printed on an offset press with offset inks and coated/uncoated stock -among other things... And we're using large format devices with solvent, eco-sol or UV inks on either vinyl or banner... Definitely not the best reference. Chroma should be read...
  6. Ink Limits

Damn, never thought of doing something like that, but its pretty ingenious as a reference. Unfortunately, Pantone charts have a shelf life, so I wouldn't recommend it. My partner and trainer told me that ColorBurst uses chroma based limiting, which is something not many RIP vendors suggest, and...
  7. Ink Limits

eye4color is not being ingenious, he's trained and is clearly color literate. Many people measure ink restrictions by eye (some even through a loupe). He's right, measuring chroma is the most accurate method. Now the question is, what chroma values are you aiming for?
  8. Help choosing next RIP -- Wasatch or Onyx??

That's correct (took that for granted in my post). I use Monaco Profiler Platinum 4.7.2 for profiling. Oldie but goodie.
  9. Help choosing next RIP -- Wasatch or Onyx??

Caldera hands down for color management and Linux, but I'm sure money and ease of use is an issue here. Wasatch with cutting option does the job. Onyx Production House is a good choice too (costs more also), but Wasatch is my choice. Messy? I've done profiling with both and Onyx is a bit more...
  10. Rasterlinkers

Unfortunately, most dealers bundle Rasterlink instead of Wasatch, Onyx or PhotoPRINT. RL is a good RIP, but there are better options, specially when it comes to color management. Whenever possible, invest in Wasatch (BTW, the 16 bit rendering technology Mimaki is using in RL is owned by...
  11. Good color management!

I've done profiles using Onyx Production House 7, great software. I've also used Wasatch, and I like it more because it requires less steps and particularly has relative colorimetric with black point compensation (Onyx lacks this), which renders a better result. Both RIPs are great, but Wasatch...
  12. color profiling lessons

Anyone can print a file, but what sets you apart is to do it accurately. My experience is that Color Management is no longer a myth and it saves thousands of dollars in costly mistakes. Most businesses should try their best to invest in a spectrophotometer, profiling software and training to...
