1304 remove cartridges

Just acquired a s/h 1304 and it is demanding cartridge removal and cleaning cartridge insertion. I watched the machine running a week ago and it was running fine. can this command be aborted, I cant find anything in the manual (no I don't have cleaning cartridges and nor did the previous owner)

What did you have to do to get the printer working? I have messed up and gotten mine doing the same thing.
