Am I the crazy one?

I got an email inquiry from our website a few weeks ago for some small engraved plastic signs looking for a quote, I quoted him $6.95 each and informed him of our $20 minimum engraving charge so he would need to order 3 to meet the minimum. I got a reply back saying:

"I’d like to see how they turn out before I order a whole whack of them. Can you do 3 for me to test out? If they work I’ll be ordering many more in future. I’m in Whitby so I like the idea of working with a local guy such as yourself!

here’s a PDF of the logo. Its fairly simple but I’d like the texture in the letters to show if possible. Could they also have small pre-drilled mounting holes (one on each side vertical middle). " he also sends me production ready artwork.

So I go and make 3, ship them to him (he's not actually that local), he pays his invoice and all is well.

Well a week or so later, the package comes back to me as undelivered, he gave me his home address and no one was home to receive the package. I email him and let him know and ask if there is another address we can use where he is available to receive the package, he gives me his work address.

I ship it off and send him another email telling him the cost to re-ship the package and ask how he would like to handle the payment, he writes me back and says "call me"

I call and he tells me that "there was a miscommunication, I never actually ordered the signs" Aparently when he said "can you do 3 for me" he was actually asking if I was physically able to make 3 tags.

I asked him why he paid the invoice for the order, plus gave me not 1 but 2 different shipping addresses if he didn't actually want the order.. He said "I felt bad about the miscommunication so I figured I would just pay you"

Just thought I would share, This is one of the strangest conversations I've had in quite some time, thought you guys might get a kick out of it

I have to ask, no written quote or sign off on production proof?

There was a written quote in the form of an email message, which he replied to and said "can I get 3"

As for production proof, the client sent production ready artwork, we don't normally do proofs for such small jobs unless asked, especially when production art is sent to us. If I had to send art proofs for every $20 engraving job that came to us I would need to hire someone just to do that.

Not to be snarky, but did you make any money?(before you had to ship it twice) There's got to be an easier way to make $20.00

Just sayin'

Yeah, not a ton, but I would have made a few bucks profit off the job, it's a super quick little job to run either with another job on the same material, or quickly in between large jobs. If I had to do little jobs like this all day I would go broke, but a few here and there is fine.
