Very cool, some I didn't know...

at Butera we had to construct letters from scratch (over and over) so we were taught some of those terms.

Thanks! I'll study this.

I started out before computers so everything I did was hand lettered. I never called them fonts. To me they were "letter styles". Although I did try to copy some of my favorites, many times I'd just make up my own attempting to come up with something that looked appropriate for the job. Other than ascenders and decenders I never had a name for the parts of a letter. Hell, I didn't even know they had names for such things.

With the advent of computers I was slammed with a zillion "fonts" most of which I've had no use for. It was, and is, so overwhelming in numbers that I've never really learned to identify font names. I simply choose one I feel is appropriate and damn the name. As a result I'm at a loss to their names. I know a few but not many.

This "anatomy lesson" might give me an insight as to what characteristics to identify as an aid in remembering font names. At any rate I'll study it over and see if it helps.
