Best Practices for Creasing E-Flute Cardboard and 12/18pt Sheets

I’ve been running a Colex cutter for a while now and frequently work with E-flute cardboard and 12/18pt sheets. One issue I keep running into is cracking—when I crease from the back and then fold, the ink and paper tend to crack.

Right now, I use a 3pt wheel for Tango 12pt and 18pt, and an 8pt wheel for E-flute (just ordered a 6pt to test). But even with these tools, the creases just don’t come out as clean as what box companies produce.

Does anyone have any tricks, settings, or techniques that help minimize cracking and improve crease quality? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Man I feel your pain. I bought a printer with bendable ink and the coatings on the paper will usually always crack, even with lamination on top for 180* turns. I've been told if you dial in your depths properly with the Colex you can have greater success, but on our AXYZ I've yet to make that happen. We've migrated to a 3pt pass on the back side and then a 6pt or 8pt pass on the face side of the sheet. I'll keep you posted if we find out a combination that's successful.

With my SummaF, it seams to be hit/miss depending on the paper. I have had good luck if I use thermal laminate on cardstock prints. I too print on 12pt-24pt cardstock.

Not all corrugated board is good for creasing.

Play with the creasing wheel depth. dont need to go super deep. try larger wheels.

I have a Colex and had the same issues. It does have the conveyor. Zero is never zero even after a table map. Added a Kongsberg C64 and eliminated almost all of my issues. If the stock is old it can still crack. That seems to be the only very random issue.

Axyz doesn't have anything that's a double crease wheel. I've been using third party Eco-cam wheels as they've got a full set of rounded wheels that seem to be more forgiving on the SBS. I wrote them to see if they've got anything, but it's not on the website so I doubt it with getting something custom machined.
