Cannot open port

I built a new work station for my printer. I went from a wireless laptop to a 'wired' desktop. Previously the laptop was connected to the internet & network via wireless and the Mutoh 1204 printer was connected via cat5 cable via TCP/IP 172.018.003.101 with submask 255.255.255.0

Now, with my desktop I have onboard LAN with only 1 cat5 port. Therefore I bought a netgear 5 port ethernet switch. The router connects to the switch and then the desktop & printer both connect into the switch. I set up the printer just like I did on my laptop however when I send a test print to the printer to see if everything is connected correctly I get the error "cannot open port". I take the printer and connect it directly to the desktop and it prints just fine, but then I don't get internet and network access to the new desktop.

Is it possible to set up my system so that I can print from the desktop to the printer through the switch? If so can someone tell me how?

Many thanks in advance !!

find out what your IP address on your new computer is. that is assigned by your router, and may be a different one than the wireless one you were getting before.

Once you know that, make sure you have your printer in the same "area" on the network. What i mean by that is, in your example, if your computer IP is 172.018.003.101, you want your pritner to be 172.018.003.xxx, where xxx is not used somewhere else on the network.

the router should be assigning IP addresses to anything it can (DHCP), and anything you manually assign should be in the same area.

hope that helps.
