Canvas?

Would like some advice on how to handle the print aspect of this sign. I will be applying some type of digital print in the recessed area of the frame then I will attach the banner to the frame. I am thinking of printing the scene on canvas and then applying clear coat with a brush to try to give the appearance of brush strokes. Have never done canvas prints before so I have a few questions/concerns.

Don't think I've seen canvas material that is adhesive backed, so I would probably have to use spray on adhesive? Or some other type of adhesive? Also how well does canvas cut? I will need to cut it to the oval shape of the frame. Should i cut before i apply it or cut it after it is applied? Will the edges fray? Can I cut canvas in my plotter? Maybe I should apply the canvas to the frame, cut it to shape, then brush on the clear coat? Any advice or input is greatly appreciated.

Do you think that this sign would look much better with canvas print as opposed to vinyl if both are brushed with a clear coat? Any recomendations as what type ov canvas material to use?

Printing with a roland xj540. Thanks for your time, I'm open to all suggestions. pub sign.jpg

Print to canvas - mount to foamcore. There is framer's foamcore that has heat activated adhesive on one side already (if you have a heat press). Then cut to shape. It cuts well as long as you have a sharp knife.

I'd avoid any acid/solvent based adhesives though - they will eat the canvas material eventually.

It's hard to tell for sure if the oval is flat or is it doamed?

It may also be too hard to do now but if you could have made a 1/8 inch or so size groove just inside the frame edge and if you use canvas, you could use a cane strip (think thats what its called) , like on those whicker rocking chairs, and it would help stretch the canvas and no need to use a glue. Also if the oval was doamed it would help to stretch it over.

Most glue may show through but a gel medium works to adhear canvas and will not bleed through. Canvas would also look very nice.

Is there a very thin framers foam core? The recess is about 3/8" and I don't want to lose too much of the recess.

As far as not using solvent based adhesive, could I use something like wallpaper glue?

The oval is flat not domed. Yea I think it's too late to slot it, but that would have been a good idea. So it sounds like if i don't do like circleville said and use some sort of backer for the canvas then the glue will probably show through a little? I have seen some product that is a double sided adhesive film. Would something like that work? assumming that it isn't solven't based.
