Cartridge change question

Ok, so I'm getting near the point where I need to put in new 440 CMYK cartridges on my SP540i, and I'd like to ask those with experience with this how to go about maxing-out the use of the remaining ink in the old cartridges.

I am about to do a dozen 4x8 prints (nothin' fancy, just 16x24 election signs ganged up), so how might I truly "empty" the old cartridges without wrecking a 4x8 print? I imagine it's likely that there's considerable ink left in a cartridge when one gets the warning signal.

Thanks

lol.....thats the question...how much more can you do. there are always alot more square foot left in thte "empty" ink cartridge than you think. i've often had a couple 6 x 3 banners, posters etc out of an "empty cartridge".... best thing to do is> when printing, keep the color thats running out ontop of the printer or near it where you load the ink in the back. take off the protective wrapper and when it runs out and beeps at you get your a$$ over there real fast and change it. that way it will contiune to print no problems.

I think if you use that theory rush, you'll at one point or another shoot a few bands of blanks in there.

i used to have four separate syringes with SS heavy duty tips in them. i'd syringe out the remaining ink from an "empty" cart. then later on jet it into a half used cart. also, get a completely empty cart and weigh it. you can develop a calculation for ml's to ounces more that a depleted cart weighs.
