Comic Sans...why such a hate fest?

I was reading in my local paper this morning a full page article on the hating of the font Comic Sans and it's history.
Apparently it was created by a Microsoft employee for a childrens program but got used again and again for other programs.

They then went on to say how it has shown up on tombstones and high end sign work.

I personally don't hate it nor do I love it. I have seen a lot more disgusting fonts and wonder how it got all the attention as a horrible font?

There's actually some really funny stuff out there bashing overused, or badly used fonts. I think the hate is from overuse, but the fonts, although sometimes overused because of lack of choice, they are often overused because they are well designed and appealing to the eye.

When I designed my business logo I searched for hours and hours for the right fonts to use. I had to go back to Mistral for part of it, even though I knew I'd catch hell for it if anyone here saw it. The font is, or was way overused, but it just fit with the feel I was going for, and I could not get away from it.

Comic sans is a playful looking font, so it is a really poor choice for a headstone or a cancer clinic sign. You don't have to be a graphic designer with 40 years experience to know that it just looks wrong.

Arial Sucks.
Sorry if offend anyone but Comic Sans is a truly ugly hand lettered genre typeface. And its default nature of availability on Windows based PCs makes its tyranny so much worse.

Given no other choice I'd rather fire up Adobe Illustrator and use my Wacom tablet to hand letter my own hand drawn type than use Comic Sans.

My dislike of Comic Sans is second only to my hatred of Arial: the typeface I associate with many putrefied ugly signs.
