Custom Sliding Sign or Slider Sign Cover Advice

Long time reader, first time poster, thank you so much for this community's resources.

I have a client that wants an outdoor sign with a slide over cover piece to obscure a part of the signs. Think of the standard "open/closed" or "occupied" signs you might see in offices.

From the photo I was given (see bottom sign), it appears to be two U-shaped channels applied to the sign face top and bottom, with a simple piece of aluminum as the slide in. I can make the sign, cut the slide-in piece of aluminum, but I've never put together this type of channel system before.

Is there a pre-existing "kit" or other type of U-channels that are created for this specific application? I've checked a few of my suppliers, and have only found plastic channel letter holders.

If not, has anyone made this before and can provide some advice? Custom outdoor sign fabrication like this is outside of my usual wheel house. So far, I think my best option is to purchase some U-channel, cut to size, and adhere it to the sign face.

Any advice on adhering this to the face of the sign? These will be .040 aluminum with 3M IJ5100 Reflective Vinyl. VHB tape feels like the wrong choice, as it would force the channel to sit farther away from the sign face and would create a place for debris to collect. That said, I'd rather not deal with waiting for liquid adhesive to dry.

Also, if I can outsource the entire project to someone, I'm happy to hear about it.

How many are we talking about ?? If it's just a few, get some 'J' channel and crimp it. Otherwise look at Outwater Plastics.
