"Destination Fee"

James Burke

Being a grandpa is more fun than working
So, I was a bit puzzled about an additional charge of what was being called a "destination fee" of 2% when I booked a hotel room.

Well....

Upon check out, I see on the invoice that the destination fee is actually worded "Destination Marketing Fund".

They shamelessly line-item their marketing budget along with their rates and taxes.

Yeah tourist trps have been doing this for years, if you go to Niagara Falls it's included on every bill, you can ask to have it removed and they have to, but most people don;t know that.

They add fees to keep their nightly room rate down and rank higher on hotel website aggregators. $159 a night but then they add a bunch of fees and it ends up being $200 a night. It's like what they do on Airbnb, rental cars.. just about anything.
