dont understand some expression like what does hinge means

I've been reeding threads and enjoying it but since i am a french canadian i sometimes dont understand some expression like what does hinge: means thanks for explaining so i can follow better.

In laying vinyl down...you have to "hinge" the legend you are applying with tape. Like when you square up your image on the substrate it will reside on...you apply tape on and over the edge of the image that has transfer tape on your "ready-to-go" vinyl.

Here's a good instructional on all types of hinge positions for tape. By the way, I personally "center hinge" everything.
