I have a request for a double sided magnetic. At first I thought, no problem, but then I realize that I don't think it can be done.

What does even mean ??

They all have positive and negative poles, so generally, they repel each other, but even if you could reverse the polarity, why would you put one magnetic sign in the other side of another ?? What would they hang on or go anywhere except on a table top, laying flat ??

customer wants a magnetic sign to be put on equipment in the shop. One way it reads green light that the machine is good to go, the other has a red light symbol that the machine is down and in need of repairs. Magnetic sheeting does not work from the front side.

how are they being applied?

magnets adhere to metal > metal is a 100% opaque surface > 2 sided is a mute point.....

unless they are wanting to be cheap and instead of getting 2 sets of mags they want 1 set and that way can flip them over to use the other information.

laminate 2 magnets face to face, so each 'out' side is now black mag material - decorate those sides

although I think it would lessen the strength of the magnetic with the extra layer & weight

I thought of doing it this way but I still don't think it will work

Was just working with some magnetic... Cut a piece off/ stuck a scrap of some Oracal 651 to the magnetic side and slapped it on the side of the laminator. It stuck! You'd have to use two of them adhesive together to be magnetic on both sides, but I would think you'd want to stay pretty thin with the vinyl so as not to take away all the magnetic power...

Do these go on the same place each time?......If so, apply magnetic material to the machine and then make a 2 sided metal applique....

This makes more sense. In fact, you can just mount a magnetic board to the machinery in question.... and make a double sided panel for it.

This makes the most sense and with this in mind, take some VHB tape and mount those wall hooks to the equipment.
put 2 holes top corners in the substrate and use a 2 sided material like 040 or ACM, one side green the other side red

Yeah we did hundreds of them.

I wouldn't try it on a vehicle magnet though, these were just for OPEN/CLOSED magnets on cabinets.

If I had to do it over again now I'd just spray mount the two layers together then direct print to both sides.

would you risk having the print head so close the polarized side of the magnets? I would think that would have some major issue potentials

Way to misunderstand what we both said differently.

All along, everyone was referring to magnetic material, which is usually the bendy magnetic stuff we all buy. I believed royster to be saying to adhere that to the machine and put a metal plate on it. That is why I said that was the best idea yet, but I went further and said a magnetic board and place the metal panels to it. I'm talking about a board, not material as we know it.

Does that help ??

Apply a 2in. Green vinyl circle and a 2in. Red vinyl circle on the machine/equipment.
Use a 2.5in. magnetic circle to cover the one you want.

You could have that the same color so it matches the equipment color if they want...

Newlife Magnetics in Alcoa, TN has double-sided magnets that will do just what you are looking for. We get all of our magnetic material that at almost half the price of Magnum. Ask for Jeff.

I was going to post this also, but another option would be to use hook & loop (velcro) strips and a piece of sintra/coro with double-sided print. It'd be a lot cheaper also and would not fall off if the machinery vibrates.
