Falcon Jr Two handed lever release

101ers - I have purchased two Mutoh Falcon Jrs in the past 6 months and both units have the same quirk. My son who has been in this sign making industry for many years got me hooked on wide format printing and it has been a great learning experience on refurbishing these older units. The quirk is that to unload paper by lifting the lever up, you need the other hand to push the head assembly all the way to the right to allow the spring loaded mechanism to leave the lever area so as to be able to raise. If only one of these had this scenario I would think it was an adjustment but since both do this I was wondering if this was how the factory wanted it to work, however I see nothing about this in the manual that I downloaded. Has anyone used this model of Mutoh and can give me any advise? Thanks.

Only if the head unit is parked at home position you can raise the paper pressure lever.
So it looks like this position is not reached. In some cases the metal clip that keeps the head at home position is bend downwards to much.
REmove the righthandside cover of the machine so you can see the lock mechanisme of the paper lever.

Auto set for home position?

Paco - I run the printer with the right cover removed as it is easier to keep it clean that way. As for the home adjustment I have set it in 100 increment from -100 to -2150 and get the same results. Is there a way to have the printer auto set the setting that's best? And for the metal clip, it appears to be set correctly as when you have the printer off you can push the head right until it locks under the clip with little pressure. Thanks for your help on this.

To use the self-diagnosis function, you should first display the self-diagnosis menu on the operation panel.
The self-diagnosis menu is completely independent of the normal operation mode and self-diagnosis display
mode. To call up the self-diagnosis menu, follow the steps below.
Step 1 : If the system is in the operation mode or the self-diagnosis menu mode, press the [POWER] key
to power off the unit.
The power is turned off.
Step 2 : Press and hold the [Head Cleaning] key, [Menu Display] key, and [Shift] key simultaneously.
While holding down these keys, press the [POWER] key.
The system will enter the self-diagnosis mode and display the self-diagnosis menu.

5.4.1 Adjusting the capping position
This procedure is used for aligning the capping position correctly by adjusting the capping position
parameters in the firmware. When this item is selected, the printer carries out the home position detection
sequence and then automatically pushes the carriage against the maintenance unit to detect the carriage
position at that time. The position displayed is the distance from the home position flag.
Press [ENTER] to update the capping positions and move to “AJST: Measure High”, press [Back] to move to
“AJST: Home” without updating the capping position.

Taken from the service manual.

You can also bend the metal lever that prevents the lever from raising to the outside so the lever can Always pass it.
Then you have to take care you do not use the lever when teh machine is in action.

Paco is the Mutoh Master

Paco That worked great! It never showed “AJST: Measure High” however it is now set so as to allow me to use the lever. Which adjustments do you perform on a regular basis to obtain the best prints? Have you owned a Falcon Jr. for a long time? If you ever publish an Falcon E-book I will be your first customer. Thanks again.

Hi James,

Nice to hear you could solve it.
I own a Junior 38 for two years.
Step by step I learned the quirks of this machine which are easy to solve.
I clean the machine once a week and check the cappingstation.
Also the wiper I replace every 3 months.
Make sure that you can see the inkflow to the waste bottle during cleaning.
If there are print quality problems this is the first to check.
If no inkflow check for the tubes from the cappingstation to the pump.
I found out they glog easily and cause the main problems in inkflow.

Enjoy the printers.
