Going back to school!

Well, I've decided to go back to college and finish my graphic design degree... only 15 years after I dropped out! I thought my credits had expired long ago but I just found out they didn't so I'm going back. I don't own the shop I work in (although I have owned one before) so I'd like to eventually get a job working in a more "corporate" type of environment. Something with benefits, vacation, retirement and all that jazz, and I really need a degree to do that.

So, starting next month, I'll be working full-time, full-time single mom and part-time school! EEK! It's going to be a busy and interesting year! Wish me luck!

BTW, kids: Finish school while you're young! And for the not so young, it's never too late to go back!

I took the pre-entry exam (never been to college) and did well enough they'll enroll me. Also looks like they offer a real-world experience credit in some areas so you might want to check that out too.

Really thought I'd start by winter but life won't allow that right now! My daughter (30) started back last year from her business admin degree w/4 kids... not always easy! Good luck to you!

Congrats!

I wen't back to school a few years back at 36. Had lots of fun. Not the same as when your a kid and you HAVE to go to school. You know you WANT to go to school... not quite the same perspective. I did found it hard to deals with people I knew where wasting their time there... But that was just a minority.

Have fun!

going back to school this fall after dropping out 6yrs ago with half an associate's in graphic design... hopefully to get that outta the way and finish my bachelor's in marketing (also half completed), as well.
UW-Madison sure was a good time... kinda depressing thinking about finishing elsewhere, like community college, but its still better than nothin'!

That's great!!!
Stacy is right - you may be able to test out of some of the classes and still get the credits. I did it when I was in school. I still had to pay for the class but it was discounted and I got full credit.
You may even be able to use your experience to bypass any prerequisites that will only eat up time and money.

Best of luck but most of all enjoy it!!!

awesome! if the economy goes to complete crap and my ultra-conservative overlords lay me off, i'll probably head back to school for a business degree.

or if i win the lottery, then it's time for multiple PhDs

Never too late for more education! Congrats. Hey, if you hang around college long enough, they let you teach!

Thanks! I've checked into getting credit for "real work experience" (or would you call it "time served?" ) and I'll be able to get some. I've already taken all the math & english 'n' such so I'll just be able to take the design classes.

I'll have to take off work most of the day, 1 day a week, and my boss is cool with that as long as my work (and the jobs) don't suffer. I'm more than willing to work at night or weekends to not get behind. Still gotta get a paycheck, ya know!

My first classes are Intro to Technical Drawing and something else that's basically learning Dreamweaver. Very exciting!

On a side note (not sure if you can do this at your school)
Don't buy any supplies or books listed on the syllabus until you talk to your professor - especially the books. 1/2 of the design classes I took we didn't even use the books. I ended up saving a good amount of $$$

Only finished two years of college the first time. Decided to go back at age 36, specifically to study graphic design... not expecting it to be a career. Once my kids were all in school, i thought it was time to do something fun for myself. I was so nervous on the way to my first class... everyone i saw looked straight out of high school. I remember thinking, this is crazy, it's gonna take me two years, i'll be 38 by the time i'm done. But then i figured, i'll be 38 in two years either way, so what the hell.

UOHK...yep...I still attend. It's the only place where the tests come before the lessons.

I'm 40 and going back to finish my Associates degree. And my lil' one is only 3 yrs old. But like you, I figured, what else am I going to be doing in a year anyway? Why didn't I think of this years ago?!?! I guess it just wasn't the right time for me to think of it!

Also, like you, when I was enrolling last week, everyone looked so young! I bet I'll be the oldest one in class! Oh, well! :)

I once saw a saying on a pencil that about sums it up:

"The truly educated never graduate"

How true.
