Graphics andTransparency?

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anyone had some tips about taking a bitmap graphic and importing them into flexi 8+. I designed a bitmap graphic in photoshop and I need to do a contour cut around the graphic so that it's tight and clean so that when I cut it it matches the contour of the graphic. I'm sort of rambling but I hope you guys what what I'm wanting to do.

In summary I'm wondering what formats will support transparency so that flexi can recognize it.

Support transparency? We simply draw a line where we want it to cut, apply a contourcut outline to it and output the thing.

That's rather time consuming though isn't it? If you had a very curvy image it would take ages to draw an exact line for the cut.

Flexi doesn't recognize anyone else's transparencies. You have to import the bitmap into Flexi then do Bitmaps->Make Transparent. The select the area you want to be transparent with the wand. You can select multiple areas by holding the shift key and invoking the wand. You can also use the 'Select Similar' option on the transparency dialog. This will make all areas of similar color transparent.

Once you set the transparency to your liking you can then invoke the Contour function and it will add a contour around those regions of the bitmap not made transparent.

Use a trace function to draw the line. You are making this too difficult. Glad I use SignLab, this is like a two second operation in there, Flexi sounds like a pain!

This is not true! Take your graphic into photoshop take out the background with the magic eraser or any tool that gets you what you want and then save as a .psd file and then import into flexi and it will keep the transparency that you had in photoshop. Then you can add your contour cut and it will follow the edge of your graphic. I do this about everyday.

This is what I do between photoshop and ai for contour cutting you could apply the same idea to flexi.

I create my raster artwork in PS. Then I create a black and white version of it, black=graphics white=transparent. Save .jpg or .tiff.

Place in illustrator, do a live trace, and set your contour. Go back to PS enable your artwork and save over the b/w .jpg.

When you step back in Illustrator it'll ask to update the placed file, do so, and the black/white image will be updated to the color artwork.

Holy Crap, I didn't know that Flexi could read .PSD Files!!!!!! This makes my job roughly 103 times easier now. Now I don't even need any of this transparency stuff. I always create images in flexi with a transparent background so now I don't have to export a .tiff out of photoshop and import it to flexi I can just drag and drop and voila with a transparent background.

I love this forum.

Glad to have been some help. I use to do it the hard way and I found this out by accident one day opening up some other files I grabbed the wrong one and it was a psd and it really speeds up the process.

I will add one more tip I found today. Flexi won't work with a .png file that already has a transparent background so all you have to do is open .png in photoshop save as .psd and then flexi can see it.
