GX-24 Repairs

Hey Everyone.. hoping someone here can provide some guidance. We have had our GX24 for quite some time with no issues but last week suddenly cutstudio could not connect to it. Would not read measurement and acted like the cutter was not there

The connection (USB port one) looks very loose on the cutter side of things so not sure if that is an issue and it is just not connecting. The cutter starts and working so it is not fried or anything, seems more like a connection issue more than anything else.
I ordered and received a serial port cable but it is a mess I am not familiar with, everything has been USB for ages now so having issues dealing with drivers etc. since some of them are very old and perhaps not compatible with the newest Windows

I know I had security updates cause problems via Windows before but that was not the issue here. I want to have someone look and repair where I think the issue is (connection of the cable on the cutter that holds the USB cable) but Roland wont service it, company we normally use for our printers/cutters wont look at it cause they cant get parts for it anymore or would rather sell me a new one for $2,000 so better business not to fix it. Called a few PC repair places and they are not familiar with it so they cannot assist.

Any ideas or suggestions on what the issue can be and how I can find someone to solve it for us? Any help or advice is appreciated. Really cannot afford to buy a new one and using our SP-300 Versacamm as a cutter for the time being and it is very very inconvenient and does not do the job that this cutter did

Thanks in advance

It could be the port on the motherboard has gone in it, the one where the USB printer cord plugs in, especially if you say it's loose. Had some similar that happen to one of our SP-300V's where the port went in it. Have you tried a different USB printer cord to confirm that wasn't the issue?

Yes. Tried the one that the SP-300 uses (same port going into printer) same issue. I just cant figure out the drivers etc with the other connection and no one is able to walk me through it. Roland has abandoned it and the regular shop refuses to even try to help

Unfortunately with older machines, your left on your own for the most part. I don't have this cutter, so wouldn't be able to help with a walk through, sorry.

Thank you. I am hoping there is someone here who has been through the same mess. I installed the cord and the drivers and it is connecting and seeing the printer but cannot fix the ports ultimately to be able to use cutstudio

Okay, if you can actually see the cutter, then it shouldn't be an issue with the port on the board.

I think the issue is not the board but where the USB cord actually connects to it.

The port cable is connected and drivers installed as it does see the cord so assume sees the cutter/printer attached to it but I cannot get past the next few steps(probably easy ones that are complicated to me) to finish the connecting part. So just need help in those steps or someone who can micro solder or whatever will be needed to make the other connection on the board to work

If it has been working since June of this year with no issues, then you will need a motherboard and it will need to be reprogrammed.
The board is available from Roland, unfortunately it is $925.00 +
A Roland dealer with a Certified Roland Technician should be able to fix it.
Have you checked with your Roland dealer?
My company is located in the Midwest and the unit can be shipped to us for repair.

It does a test cut and everything still, just an issue with the connector that goes to the USB. Since the unit is old and they cant get parts for it, our local Roland dealer does not want to work on it

do you provide phone support as I just need some assistance in setting it up with the other port. I got the cable to use it and installed the drivers but kind of stuck there

The Main Board is available in the US from Roland DGA.
is the cable you purchased serial to serial OR serial to USB?
if serial to serial you will have difficulty most like with a driver.
if using the serial to USB, serial on the cutter and the USB at the PC, it may be plug and play with the same USB driver.
I have never set a cutter up via serial cable, only USB.

User manual here:

GX Reference Guide for using Serial here:

USB Drivers here:

And yes, a brand new GS2-24 is only $2000.00 and has a 3 year warranty.
If you need the Main board for your cutter, you will spend half that.
May need to look at used options if you can’t get it to work.
