After a moment's consideration, do you (OP) happen to be testing fonts in a really old version of Microsoft Word? If that's the case, you might be looking at vanilla Calibri with MS's old font settings that didn't actually change the font when you hit the "bold" and "italic" buttons. The way they used to do it was to just (essentially) double-strike the text slightly offset to give it a bold appearance, and bias the text a few degrees to approximate italics. This of course would not actually change the glyphs to a genuine italic font, which might be why you're still seeing the double-storey lowercase "a" and the "f" with no tail.
