How can I tell if head is shot or clogged?

I have a 1204 Mutoh ValueJet. I have been printing alot of solid black backrounds. The black is now banding bad. I did a head wash. And the nozzle check is still showing alot of breaks in the pattern. I dont know if I should order a new head or try another method of cleaning?
Thanks,
Tracy

There is no quick and easy answer to this.

Try everything you can to recover the head, if none of it works you need a new head.

It's better to have two hands than one glove.

Unfortunately the answer is a bit of a tautology. That being if you can't get it to work then it's bad.

Do a head soak. Don't leave it sit soaking much more than an hour so so unless you're there to replenish the cleaning fluid on whatever it is you're using for the soak.

After the soak do a strong cleaning cycle. The print a test print that actually exercises the head. I do a KCMY [in that order left to right] spectrum as wide as my media and at least an inch or two tall. The first time after a head soak the colors will be not be all there.

Repeat the above clean and print until the thing is printing properly. Clean the wiper in between prints and see what a nozzle check looks like. If that should fail then start at the beginning with another soak.

If a couple three times through this entire process fails to shake things loose, get a new head.
